March 8th Update:  The first two days of the 2024 USCSA National Championships have netted 7 All-American finishes for the men, including two Bronze Medal finishes for Conner in the 7.5k and the Sprint, a 5th and 13th place for Kai Richter, 8th and 10th for Joey Rouhana, and a nationals best finish of 8th in the classic sprint for Noah Payne.

With this success the men's team are carrying the men's overall lead into the 15k Classic.  For times and results please click:  https://mtvanhoevenberg.com/event/uscsa-national-championships/

Preview from Monday March 4th:

Although a lot of snow has left the lower elevations in the Northeast, the snow pack in the Adirondacks is solid and ready for the USCSA National Championships this week, as the Clarkson University Nordic Ski team will join the rest of the qualifying teams at Mt. Van Hoevenberg in Lake Placid, NY.

The Events: Each of the four races will begin at 10:00 am this week, beginning with the 7.5K Skate on Tuesday. On Wednesday is the Classic Sprint and, following a day off, the final individual race will be the 15K Classic on Friday. The squads will then compete in the Team Sprint Skate on Saturday.

The Team: The Golden Knights' men will have a steady four competing in each of the individual events with a rotation for specialties on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. Conner Roberts, Kai Richter, Joey Rouhana, and Noah Payne will participate in each of the events, while Adam Jansen (7.5K Skate), Oliver Dolcino (Classic Sprint), and Torsten Brickley (15K Classic) will each compete in one race. Roberts finished eighth among 57 qualifiers in the individual overall standings, led by a second-place finish in the 7.5K Classic. Kai Richter was tied for 11th overall in the standings as he had three top-15 finishes, with his best showing coming in the 15K Skate in 2023. Joey Rouhana was 24th overall as he took 10th in the initial race, but stumped to the back half of the other two individual races. Noah Payne was 38th out of 57 last year, and was 28th in the Skate Sprint. Payne, Richter, and Roberts will comprise the team's trio for the team relay on Saturday.

The Clarkson women will be a bit shorthanded as Lillian Magnus is almost certainly out until Friday. She has been a steady force for the Golden Knights in the last two years at the nationals, taking 17th overall in 2022 and tying for 23rd in 2023. Her best showing in that time came back in 2022 when she placed 14th among 36 competitors in the 7.5K Freestyle, which was also held at Mt. Van Hoevenberg. The absence of Magnus for the first two races will put more emphasis on the efforts of Skylar Francis, who has jockeyed with Magnus this year as the team's top female performer. Francis did not shudder from increased competition at the Mansfield Divisionals or the ECSC Regionals. She was 10th among 63 skiers in the 15K Classic at the former race and then took 23rd of 56 in the Classic Sprint and 15th of 57 in the 7.5K Skate at the latter event.
