Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Gosling's Goal Game-Winner as Knights Down Union 3-2 in Overtime

Potsdam, NY – Nicole Gosling scored less than two minutes into overtime to push the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team over the top in a 3-2 victory against Union College Friday evening at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights, ranked sixth in the country, gained an additional point with the overtime victory, moving to 8-3 overall and 2-1 in ECAC games, while Union saw its mark fall to 5-8 and 3-2. Clarkson will take on Rensselaer on Saturday afternoon.

The game-winner came early on in the extra session, though it was on a break out from the opposite end. Skating 2-on-2, Anne Cherkowski brought the puck into the zone and tried to take a shot on net, but her attempt was blocked by a Union defender. The last to enter the offensive zone was Nicole Gosling, picking up the loose puck and wristing a shot in at 1:51 for the game-winner.

The action was consistent from the beginning, as Friday evening's opening period was one of the faster ones played at Cheel Arena in some time with infrequent whistles leading to only seven total faceoffs. The media timeout, normally scheduled for the first whistle after the 10-minute mark, didn't come until there was just 1:39 to go thanks to some icing calls and steady skating by both sides. The best chances of the period for both teams came only 10 seconds apart. Raedyn Spademan hit the post on a 3-on-1 with 5:13 remaining and at the other end Paige Greco's tip redirection was denied only nine seconds later.

Following the scoreless first period, Clarkson took little time getting on the board. Sidney Fess kept the puck in the zone at the point and pass the puck down to Sena Catterall near the right circle. Fess and Catterall then traded places and Fess sent a pass through the slot and traffic, setting up a one-time for Anne Cherkowski at the left circle. Cherkowski let loose and sent the puck over the shoulder of Sophie Matsoukas just 39 seconds in.

Jenna Smellie had two chances around the seven-minute mark, but missed on a 2-on-1 wide and then had another shot high. That turned out be a key moment as Union was able to tie the game a few moments later. The Garnet Chargers cleared the zone by blocking a pass and took the puck down behind the net. Stephanie Bourque tried a wrap-around but was stopped by Julia Minotti with the left pad. However, she couldn't smother the puck and the rebound was flipped in by Maddie Suitor at 10:17.

Clarkson regained the lead early on in the second period as Rhea Hicks had possession of the puck in the neutral zone and passed to her left to Sena Catterall. Hicks then made some space by skating in front of Catterall, allowing the junior's shot in the slot to be wristed through at 5:28.

Again, the Garnet Chargers had an answer about six minutes later. Clarkson tried to clear the zone with a flip high off the boards, but Giavanna Mancy put a hand up and caught the puck to keep it just inside the blue line. Her quick pass to Greco resulted in a shot that was denied by Minotti, but again a rebound was picked up by Karianne Englebert, who lifted a shot over the stick side shoulder of the Clarkson netminder at the 11:17 mark.

Clarkson had a handful of chances to win the contest in the final three minutes. Caroline Goffredo's shot on the doorstep was snuffed out when Matsoukas caught the shot in the bread basket at 2:30. Baylee Kirwan's tip attempt went wide at 1:45 and Anne Cherkowski's shot near the stick side post was pushed away at 1:12.

Clarkson finished the game with a 29-18 edge in shots on goal (82-45 overall). Only one power play occurred in the game with Union coming up empty in the second period. Minotti gained the win with 16 saves and Matsoukas had 26 saves for the Chargers.
