Women's Lacrosse | 2/6/2023 8:00:00 AM

Returning seven starters from a year ago, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team is looking to return to the Liberty League Tournament for the fourth time in five seasons as the campaign begins its season on the last day of February.

Although Ben Gaebel stepped down as head coach following the 2022 season, the coaching staff is filled with familiar faces. Ally Burrows, the team's top assistant for the last three seasons, is entering her first season as head coach for the Green and Gold, while assistant coach Natalie Farnett will be on the sideline after spending the last five seasons playing for the Golden Knights.

Clarkson will have to replace some key players from last year's squad, including three-time Liberty League All-Star Sydney Roderick, who led the team in scoring a year ago with 60 points on 30 goals and 30 assists. Defensively, the Knights will be without midfielder Grace Hagberg, who provided steady production on both sides of the ball, and defenders Anna Patterson and Farnett, as well as goalkeeper Sydney Christiansen, all due to graduation.

Outside of Roderick and Hagberg, the Golden Knights return the majority of their offensive punch from a season ago. Two-time Liberty League All-Star Madelynn Barnum was the team's leading goal scorer a year ago with 49, and was busy in the midfield overall, leading the team in groundballs (28), caused turnovers (17), and draw controls (62). Graduate student Mia Petrone contributed 36 points (28-8-36) and ranked second on the squad in draw controls (55) and tied for third in caused turnovers (13). Julia Lavarnway also chipped in 36 points on 27 goals and nine assists, while Hailey Millington had 26 points thanks to 24 goals and a pair of assists. Barnum, Petrone, Lavarnway, and Millington combined for 128 of the team's 201 goals scored in 2022, but that is not the end of the returning offensive punch for the Knights. Sofie Mangino tied for second on the team in assists with nine and had 15 points overall, while Chrissy Benedict scored 12 goals despite joining the team a few weeks into the season.

On the other end of the field, Clarkson also has a solid group of returning players. Rylee Ganter and McKenzie Tikalsy each started 14 games a year ago and should be the key veterans of the team's defense. Ganter ranked third on the team a year ago in both groundballs (23) and caused turnovers (13), while Tikalsy had 22 groundballs.

Hoping to replace Christiansen in goal are first-year collegians Jennaca McGill and Danni Moran. The duo expects to split time and starting nods for most of the season. Besides McGill and Moran, there are several other newcomers who should jump right into the lineup and see key minutes for the Golden Knights. On the defensive end, Ireland Morgia and Maeve Bartell will see time along with veterans Ganter and Tikalsky. On offense, Lauren Shanahan and Sydney Nakas will look to replace the production of the graduated seniors, and keep the team's offense in the top half of the conference once again.
