Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Knights' Season Comes to a Close in 18-5 Loss in Liberty League First Round at Ithaca

Ithaca, NY – A strong offense by Ithaca at the start put the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team in a position to play catch-up from the start, as the Golden Knights suffered an 18-5 loss to the Bombers in the first round of the Liberty League playoffs on Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their season come to a conclusion at 10-8, while Ithaca moved to 12-5 on the year.

Ithaca's offense got off to a hot start with four goals in the first eight minutes, but it was the Bombers' control of possession that made them difficult to stop, as the team registered 15 shots (12 on goal0 in the first quarter. The margin was slightly smaller in the second quarter (12-5), but the success rate was greater for Ithaca, as the team netted five goals in the next 15-minute stretch. Meanwhile, the Knights scored late in the first quarter to get on the board thanks to a player-up goal by Makenna Cassin with 14 seconds left, and Clarkson also scored back-to-back goals just 52 seconds apart in the middles of the second to make the score 7-3. Ithaca tallied twice in the final four minutes to regain its six-goal advantage at the break.

Any hopes of a comeback were gone early in the third quarter when Ithaca found the back of the net six times in a stretch of less than 10 minutes, putting the Bombers up by double figures. From that point, Clarkson struggled to get shots off since the Bombers were keen on holding onto the ball, allowing the Knights just one shot over the final 15 minutes of the game.

Gabby Cranfield had a hand in four of the five goals for the Knights, finding teammates for four assists in the contest. Leah Hoeksema and Makenna Cassin each scored twice and Karli Scherpf also added a goal. Cassin also won seven draw controls and caused one turnover. Riley Donovan made 12 saves for Clarkson and Jennaca McGill finished off the contest making one save.

For Ithaca, Leigh Naturale recorded five points on four goals and an assist while Lily Cody also contributed five points on three goals and two assists, while also adding in seven draw controls. Five other players also recorded two points each. Mikaela Datillo produced seven stops for the Bombers.
