Despite a spirited effort in the 3rd period, the Golden Knights' comeback fell short as the Saints were able to cap off a weekend sweep with a 4-2 win.
The game did not start well for the Knights as SLU jumped out to an early lead when Aleksi Peltonen scored at 2:12 of the 1st. Then penalty trouble got the Knights on the next shift. As is often the case in rivalry games, emotions are high and on his first shift,
Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup finished a hit that resulted in a 5-minute major for hitting from behind. The Saint's Josh Boyer also got a roughing minor at the same time, so it was 4 on 4 hockey for part of the major and
Ryan Richardson was able to tie the game at 3:23. The Knights would kill off the 3 minutes remaining of Saints power play.
SLU was able to take a 2-1 lead when Reillly Moran scored and then extended their lead to 3-1 in the first period when Jordan Steinmetz scored with 4:14 left in the period.
In the 2nd period,
Mathieu Gosselin pulled the Knights to within a goal when he scored at 2:14.
The Knights would carry the play in the 3rd, and got a 5-minute power play with 6 minutes left in the game, but were unable to score and with the extra attacker on the ice, Steinmetz was able to get his second of the game to ice it for the Saints.
Ethan Haider started and was relieved by
Brady Parker who did not allow a goal on 12 shots.
Next up the Knights travel to Yale and Brown.
