An unbalanced schedule and some missteps near the end of the season cost the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team a postseason berth by just a half game last spring, but that is something that the Golden Knights look to remedy with a strong veteran group headlining the 2022 incarnation of the Green and Gold.

Led by head coach Ben Gaebel and assistants Ally Burrows, Kaila Lincoln, and Kaycee Maguire, Clarkson has nine players with at least two full seasons of experience, something that many other teams in the conference lack. That depth and experience, along with four all-stars returning, have the Liberty League coaches tapping the Golden Knights for a third-place finish in the conference's pre-season poll.

2022 Liberty League Preseason Poll/Outlook

Clarkson lost just three of its top 10 scorers from a year ago, and only one of the top five. Senior Sydney Roderick might already have reached the 200-point plateau for her career had she not missed a full season's worth of games over the last two years. Regardless of the abbreviated playing opportunities, Roderick still has 143 career points in just 34 games, including 45 in 11 contests a year ago. A Liberty League Second-Team All-Star, Roderick led the conference in assists per game (2.45) and ranked seventh in the league in points per game (4.09). Joining her is classmate Grace Hagberg, a frequent target of her passes who scored 25 goals a year ago. Hagberg, also a Liberty League Second-Team All-Star, was among the team leaders in draw controls (34) and is busy on the offensive end and in the midfield. Sophomore Madelynn Barnum also made an impressive impact for the Knights in her debut season, ranking second on the team in points (29) and tied for second in goals (25) while leading the team in draws (39) and also ranking second in caused turnovers (11), figures that helped her gain Liberty League First-Team All-Star honors.

Adding to the team's offensive punch are returning veterans Julia Lavarnway (15-7-22), Sofie Mangino (6-5-11), and Hailey Millington (4-0-4). Seniors Mia Petrone and Abigail Johnson missed most of last year with injuries but are poised for strong comebacks, only adding to the team's offensive potential.

A good portion of Clarkson's defense departed via graduation a year ago, but the Knights still have plenty of players to make opposing offenses earn their chances. Senior Anna Patterson was a Liberty League Second-Team All-Star a year ago, posting 18 draw controls and tying for fourth on the team with 10 caused turnovers. Graduate student Natalie Farnett was a pleasant surprise as a returner, and she recorded 14 groundballs and caused eight turnovers in 11 contests, including nine starts, a year ago. Sophomore Rylee Ganter spent most of her time serving as a reserve for the defense, but she still ranked among the team leaders in both groundballs (19) and caused turnovers (11). Senior Kim Parker also appeared in 10 contests a year ago and added to the team's depth on the defensive end.

Though Clarkson graduated two of its goalkeepers, senior Sydney Christiansen is back to provide some experience in the crease. Christiansen has played roughly 130 minutes over her three seasons and had a 7.64 goals against average over the course of three games a year ago.
