Giraldi Highlights Golden Knights Nordic Team's Showing at EISA Vermont Carnival

Huntington, VT - Senior Michael Giraldi finished in the middle of the pack at the EISA Vermont Carnival/NCAA Regional Championships, posting an 11th place finish as six Clarkson University Nordic Skiers qualified for the NCAA Championships in mid-March.

The University of Vermont won the carnival with a score of 271 (138-133) and was followed the University of New Hampshire at 247 (122-125). St. Lawrence took third with a score of 193 (94-99) and the Golden Knights took fourth with 179 points (92-87).

RESULTS

Girladi was 11th out of 24 competitors on the men's side, finishing the 10K Classic with a time of 27 minutes, 7.4 seconds. At the midway point, Giraldi was 12th, but over the final five kilometers he had the 10th best time to jump one spot in the final rankings. Junior Simon Zehr also had a faster second half, closing out the course in 27:47.1, vaulting from 14th through five kilometers to the 11th fastest time over the final 5,000 meters. Sophomore Conner Roberts was one spot behind Zehr in 14th overall, finishing in 27:54.4. That trio will advance to the NCAA Championships, hosted by the University of New Hampshire on the second weekend of March.

Senior Michael Salo took 15th place (28:05.8), freshman Noah Payne was 16th (28:21.8) and junior Jacob DeAngelis came in 19th (29:33.1), rounding out Clarkson's six team entrants. Individuals Tom Robinson (20th, 31:09.5), Hunter Krebs (21st, 31:25.2), Phillip Buck (22nd, 34:37.8) and Samuel Walzak (23rd, 41:45.6) also competed in the race.

For the women, Clarkson only had four active skiers which diminished the possible scoring opportunities for the team. Freshman Lillian Magnus was the top performer, coming in 26th out of 29 competitors in 37:55.4. Sophomore Ava Schieffert was next in 27th in 41:10.3, and senior Elise Paquette followed up in 28th in 42:05.5 to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Junior Abigail Howard came in 29th in 44:55.4.
