Clarkson Women First, Men Second at North Country Invitational

Potsdam, NY – Grace Girard and Maddie Nowicki tied for first in the 200 butterfly, headlining another stellar day for the Clarkson University Swimming & Diving program as the Golden Knights closed out the North Country Invitational, held at SUNY Potsdam.

The Golden Knights' women topped the team rankings with 600.5 points, leading St. Michael's (420.5), Norwich University (299), Colby-Sawyer College (247), and SUNY Potsdam (212). The Clarkson men couldn't make up ground from the first day's events and finished with 496 points, behind Norwich (572 points) but ahead of St. Michael's (399) and SUNY Potsdam (294).

Final Results of 2021 North Country Invitational

Four Clarkson women won their individual events on Saturday, though three of them did so by tying for the top time. Girard and Nowicki somehow touched the pad at the exact moment, finishing in 2:25.55, to split the first and second place points for the 200 butterfly event. Later on, Bella Triolet also finished in a tie in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:04.84. Clarkson's lone event in which the individual didn't split points at the top was the 200 breaststroke, where Taylor Lee earned the top spot with a time of 2:34.97.

Nowicki also came in second in the 400 individual medley (4:58.35) and Amelia Kanner was third in that same event (5:08.22). Paige Fronczak was the runner-up in the 100 freestyle in 56.21 seconds, and Gabriela McSwieney came in third in the 200 freestyle (2:06.78). Clarkson's two relays also picked up key points, as the 200 medley relay group of Triolet, Lee, Kaili Sacco, and Fronczak combined for 1:58.22 to take second, and Triolet, Lee, Kanner, and Fronczak closed out the day with a win in the 400 freestyle relay (3:49.06).

Clarkson's men came away with a single win on day two of the invitational, with Michael Schroeder taking top honors in the 200 butterfly (2:06.72). Several others were able to finish in the top three, however, to allow the Knights their second-place showing. Tristan Miranda came in third in the 1650 freestyle (18:01.24), Colin Urmaza was third in the 400 individual medley (4:43.86), Calvin Woolfolk came in third in the 200 breaststroke (2:20.26), and both Cooper Mattice and Schroeder were in the top three in the 100 backstroke, with Mattice finishing second in 57.01 seconds and Schroeder taking third in 57.62 seconds. Schuyler Thomas was also runner-up in the 3-meter dive, scoring 180.35 points.
