Knights Edge Saints in First Game of Weekend North Country Series

In an evenly played game between archrivals in the North Country on Friday night, Clarkson edged out St. Lawrence 2-1 in ECAC Women's Hockey action before 633 fans at Cheel Arena.

The 7th-ranked Golden Knights, who improved to 16-3-4 overall and to 7-2-2 in the conference, will face off again against the Saints (8-9-5, 3-5-3) on Saturday afternoon in Canton at 3:00 p.m. for the initial game in St. Lawrence's newly renovated Appleton Arena.

Juniors Tia Stoddard (La Mesa, CA) and Elizabeth Giguere (Quebec City, QUE) scored the goals for the Green and Gold, while sophomore Marie-Pier Coulombe (Carignan, QUE) posted 24 saves as the Knights won their fourth straight over their rivals and for the 10th time in the last 11 meetings with St. Lawrence.

Clarkson held a slim 26-25 shot advantage. Both teams were 0-of-2 on the power play.

The Saints opened the scoring earlier in the first period on a goal by Anna Segedi at 3:43, but that would be it for St. Lawrence as Coulombe held the visitors off the scoreboard the rest of the way with nine first-period saves, 15 stops in the middle frame and two more over the final 20 minutes.

Clarkson tied the game at 9:29 of the opening stanza on Stoddard's first goal since late October. Stoddard finished off a pass by linemate Kristy Pidgeon (Ingleside, ONT), knocking in a shot at the top of the crease for her second goal of the year. Coulombe also picked up an assist.

Early in the second period the Knights went on top with the nation's leading goal scorer connecting. Stationed at the side of the net, Giguere swept in a rebound off a shot from the point by captain, senior defenseman Ella Shelton (Ingersoll, ONT) at 6:45 for her 23rd goal of the season and 20th point (11-9) in 10 games against the Saints. Senior Kayla Friesen (Winnipeg, MAN) also assisted.

The game was scoreless for the remainder on the contest. St. Lawrence pulled goaltender Lucy Morgan with just under two minutes to play, but the Green and Gold closed out a solid third period against the Saints, limiting their rivals to just two shots on goal over the final 20 minutes.
