If not for a midseason scoring drought, the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team likely would have made a return trip to the Liberty League playoffs in 2018. With seven-plus starters back and a strong recruiting class, the Golden Knights look to get back to the postseason under first-year head coach Zac Shaw.

The Green and Gold open up the 2019 season with their annual classic style tournament this weekend when the team takes on Johnson & Wales on Friday and Brockport on Saturday at Hantz Turf Field.

Key Returners: The Golden Knights scored 14 goals in the first seven games of the 2018 season but produced just four scores in the final 10 contests of the year. The bulk of the offense returns, with only the graduation of Summer Gillespie a key loss on offense. Senior Giulia Mahoney, a Liberty League All-Star Honorable Mention, was the team's top scorer last year, producing 15 points on five goals and five assists. Classmate Camryn Careccia scored seven points with three goals and an assist, down somewhat from her sophomore season as opponent defensive schemes gave her even more attention. With modest scoring output from both players, each could find themselves in the top 10 all-time in scoring at Clarkson.

Alicia Bushey and Megan Murphy, two more seniors, are also threats on offense and return as starters for the Knights. Additionally, juniors Allison Coon and Sadie Humiston each received starting nods 11 times last year and will provide more leadership.

Defensively, senior Elyse Green is looking to make her mark on the Clarkson record book. She currently ranks third all-time in goals against average (1.23) and is only one win away from tying the school mark. Her 11 shutouts are also only four short a new standard at Clarkson. A key component to Green reaching those marks will be sophomore Emma Harrigan. A standout in her first season with the Knights, Harrigan was the only player to start all 17 games and she led the team in minutes played with 1569, taking a break from the pitch for all of 36 minutes last year.

Key Newcomers: The Knights welcome eight first-year collegians to the fold this year. All will look to contribute at some point in 2019, but three could see starting roles, or at the very least key minutes, early on. Forwards/midfielders Madelyn Van Aken and Sarah Kohls will look to contribute to the team's offensive punch, while Delaney Holohan looks to replace a significant portion of minutes in the defensive midfield from departed seniors.
