Knights Rally in Second Half, but Fall to Cardinals 4-2

Potsdam, NY – Two early second-half goals erased the deficit at the break, but the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team allowed two goals in the final 20 minutes to drop a 4-2 decision in the season-opener against St. John Fisher on Tuesday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights will now be on the road for the next couple of weeks, beginning with games at Oneonta State and Hartwick this weekend.

The two teams felt one another out in the early going, with Clarkson getting some early chances off corner kicks and the Cardinals testing Golden Knights' goalkeeper Kenzie Roth on her right side. St. John Fisher had a chance midway through the half that was broken up by Roth on a slide, but the Cardinals were rewarded with a penalty kick chance. After seeing her teammates try Roth to the right post, Emily Woolingham chose the opposite side and found the back of net at 30:03.

Eight minutes later, the Cardinals picked up another score when Molly Simmons sent a pass in from the left side near the penalty line and Maebh Whyte was able to volley it high over the Clarkson defense. Roth got a hand on it, but did not get enough to keep it out of the net, making it 2-0 at 38:04.

After the halftime break, the Knights tied the game in short order, picking up a pair in barely four minutes of play. The first game on a one-timer shot from Jamie Dahlgard after a pass from Thea Armistead at 46:35. Then, in a near carbon copy of the first goal, Callie Abel from the right side did the same, finding Ella Intrieri for a redirect at 49:05.

Both teams traded chances for the next 20 minutes, but it was the Cardinals that would break the tie with a little under 18 minutes remaining. The Cardinals worked the ball through the midfield for a 3-on-3 with space all around and near the right sideline, Olivia Kalil was able to create just enough space to change it to a 3-on-2, finding Olivia Feehan in the middle. Feehan then went high into the corner at 72:27.

St. John Fisher picked up an insurance goal in the final five minutes of the contest. It appeared as if the Cardinals would come up empty on a corner kick, but the ball bounced around in the box after a few touches, allowing Emily Woolingham to clean up the mess for her second goal of the game at 85:30.

The Cardinals ended the game with a 17-9 edge in shots (12-4 in shots on goal) and each team finished with five corner kicks. Roth had eight saves for the Knights and Isabella Ayers made two saves for St. John Fisher.
