Early Second Half Score Puts Knights on Winning Side of 2-1 Decision Against Oneonta

Oneonta, NY – An early goal in the second half by Maddison Haver turned out to be the difference as the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team picked up a 2-1 win over Oneonta State on Saturday afternoon, day one of the Mayor's Cup Tournament.

The Golden Knights improved to 1-1 on the season and will face another team located in Oneonta, Hartwick College, on Sunday afternoon.

Clarkson took little time getting on the scoreboard, tallying just 10 minutes into the contest. Callie Abel started the play with a throw-in deep in Oneonta defensive territory, and the Red Dragons got the first touch with a header off the throw, but Thea Armistead quickly gathered the ball near the end line and sent a pop up into the box. The ball eluded an Oneonta defender and allowed Aviana Johnson to gain possession before the Dragons' defense could reset, as she sent a high shot into the opposite corner at 10:00 to make it 1-0.

Oneonta tied the game less than six minutes later, keeping pressure on Clarkson's defense after a kick from Kenzie Roth was collected by the Red Dragons at midfield. Caroline Schimitsch held the ball and was surrounded by three Clarkson defenders at about 30 yards out, but she was somehow able to sneak a pass through the crowd to Bella Mattoni, and Mattoni hit a hard grounder to the opposite corner at 15:55, tying the contest 1-1.

To start the second half, the Golden Knights had continued pressure in the Oneonta end, kept alive at a key moment by Rachael Matthews about a dozen yards above the penalty area. Matthews chipped the ball forward and above a handful of Oneonta defenders, finding Maddison Haver at the top of the box. The Oneonta goalie had some trouble getting to the spot in time, which allowed Haver to make a run around for an easy tap in at 46:09.

Oneonta enjoyed some scoring chances against the Knights, including three saves in a by Kenzie Roth in a stretch of 66 seconds near the midway point of the half, but the Dragons had only two shots the rest of the way, one sailing high and the other denied by Roth in the final two minutes of the game.

Oneonta outshot Clarkson 21-16 and had a 14-9 edge in shots goal. Roth finished with 13 saves for the Knights and Emily Hardison had six saves for the Red Dragons.
