Former Clarkson Coach Jerry York Selected for Hockey Hall of Fame

6/26/2019 9:50:00 AM

Former Clarkson Head Coach Jerry York has been recognized for his outstanding contribution to the sport of hockey and is one of six new members of the Hockey Hall of Fame.

York, who led the Golden Knights for seven seasons from 1972-79, will be inducted in the Builder Category, during the induction ceremony that will take place on November 12 in Toronto.

York is the winningest coach in the history of the men's college game with 1,067 victories in his 48 seasons as a coach. He will begin his 26th year as head coach at Boston College this upcoming season.

His career began at Clarkson in 1972, when he became the program's fifth head coach, taking over the reins from Len Ceglarski. He guided the Green and Gold to 125 victories, a .588 winning percentage, five winning campaigns and six trips to the ECAC playoffs.

York's 1976-77 team, which was highlighted by high-scoring snipers Dave Taylor (ECAC Player of the Year), Bill Blackwood, Sid Tanchak, Kevin Zappia and Marty McNally, produced the most goals ever scored at Clarkson (223) and posted a first place finish in the ECAC regular season with a league record of 19-4. York, who guided the Knights to a 26-8 overall record, was named NCAA Division I Coach of the Year that same season.

He moved on to Bowling Green in 1979 and spent 15 years at the school, leading them to six NCAA title berths and a championship in 1984. He is the only Division 1 head coach with over 1,000 wins to his name.

Since the 1994-95 campaign, York has led Boston College to a 600-315-86 record during his tenure, winning four NCAA titles (2001, 2008, 2010 and 2012).

York will be enshrined with players Hayley Wickenheiser, Guy Carbonneau, Vaclav Nedomansky, and Sergei Zubov. Jim Rutherford will also be inducted as a "builder."
