Knights Back at Cheel to Host Ivy Foes

With six games remaining in the regular season Clarkson University is firmly in the mix for the race to secure a coveted top four spot in the highly contested ECAC Hockey standings. The Golden Knights are tied for third place in the league, along with Harvard, with a 10-6 conference record. Clarkson is four points behind league-leader Cornell and one point back of Quinnipiac in second place. The Green and Gold hold a one-point advantage over fifth-place Yale.

Guided by eighth-year Head Coach Casey Jones and assistants Josh Hauge and Brent Brekke, the Knights are ranked 10/11th in the national polls and are one victory shy of reaching the 20-win mark for the second consecutive season with a 19-9 overall record. 

Clarkson hosts Dartmouth and Harvard this weekend at Cheel Arena. Both games are 7:00 p.m. starts and will be broadcast on B99.3 FM and livestreamed on ESPN+. The Knights are coming off a weekend split in Central NY, falling to 10th-ranked Cornell 5-0 in Ithaca before earning  a 2-1 victory over Colgate in Hamilton.

• Clarkson holds a decisive 73-30-7 all-time advantage over Dartmouth.  The Knights shut out the Big Green for the seventh time in the series with a 2-0 whitewash at Thompson Arena on January 26. Dartmouth was coming off its first regular-season sweep of the Knights in 12 years with the Big Green winning a pair of 3-2 games in 2017-18. The teams are tied 5-5 over the last 10 games. Clarkson owns an 18-6-3 record over the Big Green at Cheel.
• Harvard, which leads the all-time series against Clarkson 58-55-12. The Crimson
hold a 3-1-1 advantage in the last five meetings and are 6-3-1 against the Green and Gold in the past 10 games.  Three of the last four meetings have been overtime contests. The Crimson took the first meeting this season 4-3 in Cambridge, MA on January 25. The Knights overcame a 4-1 deficit just six seconds into the third period to knock off the Crimson 5-4 in overtime in the 2018 ECAC Hockey semifinals on March 16. At Cheel Arena, last season, the rivals battled to a wild 6-6 tie on January 19. Clarkson is 15-13-3 against the Crimson at Cheel. 
• The Knights are 10-2 in Potsdam this season. The only two blemishes on Clarkson's home slate are a 2-1 loss to Yale (12/1) and a 4-2 setback to Quinnipiac (2/1).
• The Knights suffered their worst loss of the season with the 5-0 blanking at Cornell. Playing a Top 10 foe for the second consecutive Friday night, Clarkson struggled from the start against the Big Red at Lynah Rink and was shutout for the first time since the 2-0 loss to Providence in last March's NCAA East Regional.
• Clarkson came back the next night with two goals from junior right wing Haralds Egle and a solid game from junior Jake Kielly with 28 saves to skate past Colgate 2-1 at Class of 1965 Arena.
• Since posting an eight-game winning streak (12/8 – 1/19) the Knights have split their past three weekend series, losing on Friday and winning on Saturday. Clarkson is 7-5 in Friday night games, 11-3 on Saturday and 1-1 on other days of the week.
• During the past three weekends the Knights have allowed 13 goals on Friday night, while scoring five. The past three Saturdays Clarkson has allowed just two goals, while scoring seven.
• Clarkson's defensive effort is tied for sixth in the NCAA, allowing only 2.00 goals per game.
• Although the Knights do not have one player ranked among the top 10 point-per-game producers in the nation, Clarkson's offense is averaging 3.14 goals per game, 15th in the NCAA.
• The Knights' scoring margin is tied for 7th in the NCAA at 1.14.
Haralds Egle has had the hot hand for the Golden Knights in recent games. The junior forward scored both goals in the 2-1 win at Colgate and has tallied 13 points (7-1) in the first 11 games of the New Year. Egle is Clarkson's leading goal scorer with 14 and second in points with 30. He recorded 16 points (5-11) last season. Egle shares the team lead in game-winners (3).
• Co-captain Nico Sturm leads the Green and Gold's balanced offensive effort with 34 points, ranking tied for 12th in the NCAA in points per game (1.21). He has tallied 12 goals and a team-high 22 assists. The junior center has recorded at least one point in 25 of the first 28 games. Sturm saw his 13-game point streak  with 17 points (6-11) since December 7 end in Friday's loss at Cornell. He came back the next night assisting on both Clarkson goals in the win at Colgate for his ninth multiple-game of the season. Sturm is bidding to become the next Golden Knight to join the century club with 92 career points (34-58) in 107 games. ECAC Hockey's Best Defensive Forward last season, Sturm holds a team-high +19 plus/minus rating. He is Clarkson's top center at the faceoff circle, winning 55.8% (246-195) of his draws. He was named ECAC Hockey Player of the Week on December 31 and is a Clarkson Hobey Baker Award nominee.
• Five other Golden Knights are scoring in double figures.  Through 28 games, 21 Knights have scored at least one goal and 23 of 24 skaters (with the exception of freshman defenseman Cam Ginnetti, who join the team in the second semester) have recorded at least one point. 
• Co-Captain, junior Devin Brosseau has tallied at least one point in eight of the last 10 games. He is tied for third on the Clarkson scoring chart with 19 points (8-11). He is
tied for the team lead in power-play scores (4). 
• Starting all 28 games, junior Jake Kielly ranks among the NCAA's best in all the major goaltending categories.  He is tied for most wins in Division I with 19, tied for third in shutouts with five,  posts a .929 save percentage (9th in the nation) and a 1.92 goals against average (9th).  He has allowed two-or-fewer goals in 20 of the 28 games. He leads all active NCAA goaltenders in career shutouts with 16. Kielly is fifth on the Green and Gold's all-time win list with a 57-35-11 career record.  He was named MVP of the Desert Hockey Classic, gained ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Month honors for October and January and  has earned ECAC Hockey goaltender of the Week accolades three times this season (11/5, 11/19, 12/31). Kielly was named one of the 20 Division I goaltenders to the watch list for the 2019 Mike Richter Award, which annually honors the most outstanding goaltender in the NCAA. He is also a Clarkson Hobey Baker Award nominee.
• The Knights have tallied the opening goal in 22 of the 28 games, going 16-6 when they get on the scoreboard first. Clarkson scored the opening goal at Colgate, snapping a stretch of three consecutive games when the opponents scored first.
• Clarkson is 17-0 when leading after two periods and 0-8 when trailing through 40 minutes.
Aaron Thow and Greg Moro lead the Knights' offensive production from the blueline. Both have scored 17 points on five goals and 12 assists. Thow, one of just three seniors on the Clarkson roster, tallied 26 points (7-19) through his first three seasons with a career-high 11 points (2-9) last year. Moro entered his junior campaign with 18 career points (2-16), including eight (0-8) in 2017-18.
• After playing in just nine games and recording one assist as a freshman on Clarkson's deep blueline last season, sophomore Connor McCarthy is starting to make an impact for the Golden Knights this season. The tallest player in the league at 6-7, McCarthy has skated in all 28 games this season, scoring nine points on four goals and five assists, including four points (2-2) over the past nine games. Three of his goals have come on the power play. 
• Clarkson defensemen are chipping in 28.2% of the offense, recording 67 points on 19 goals and 48 assists, tied for the sixth most productive blueline offensively in the nation.  All eight of the Knight rearguards (with the exception of Ginnetti) have tallied at least one goal.
• Sophomore Jack Jacome is tied for third on Clarkson in points with 19, including 15 assists.
• Despite playing in only 21 of the first 28 games because of an injury late in the 2018 portion of the schedule, Josh Dunne has emerged as one of the top rookie forwards in the conference.  The freshman center leads Clarkson's Class of 2022 in scoring with 14 points. He is third on Clarkson in goals with nine. Dunne is tied for second as the overall leading goal scorer among ECAC Hockey freshmen and is tied for seventh overall among the nation's rookies in goal scoring. He has connected twice on the power play, netted three game-winners and one shorthanded marker. Since coming back from injury, Dunne has tallied five goals and two assists in the past 13 games. He posts a +10 plus/minus rating.
• One of three freshmen centers consistently in the lineup, Anthony Callin is finding his scoring touch with all his five points coming over the past 10 games. Playing in 24 games, Callin has tallied three goals and two assists.
• The Knights' nine-member freshman class has combined to skate in 182 games (most of any Clarkson class) and has contributed 21% of the scoring with 19 goals and 30 assists.
• Clarkson's power play is ranked 19th in Division I, clicking at 19.8% (18-91).  the Knights have struggled recently with the man-advantage, going just 1-of-10 over the past six games. 
• The Knights' penalty kill is ranked 18th in the country at 83.8% (83-99).  On Friday at Cornell, Clarkson allowed the Big Red to score twice on three power plays. That was the first time the Knights allowed multiple power-paly goals in a game, since a dismal 2-of-6 shorthanded effort  in the 6-3 loss at Canisius (11/10).
• Clarkson starts fast and finishes strong, outscoring the opponents 29-17 in the first period and 35-15 over the final 20  minutes of regulation. The Green and Gold are even in the middle frame 23-23
• Clarkson has played in 12 games that have been decided by three-or-more goals, going 9-3 in those contests. 
• Junior defenseman Jordan Schneider leads the team in block shots with 42.
• Goaltender Kris Oldham, a junior transfer serving a year-in-residence and not NCAA eligible to compete for the Knights until 2019-20, will be competing for the U.S. Men's National University Team at the 2019 Winter World University Games from March 1-9 in Krasnoyarsk, Russia.
Devin Brosseau and Nico Sturm have been named "Robert E. Empie '68 Men's Hockey Team Captains" while Marly Quince and Jake Kielly will serve as assistant captains.

Clarkson saw a three-game winning streak end against Dartmouth in their first meeting last season as the Big Green skated away with a 3-2 triumph at Cheel Arena on January 20. Dartmouth also earned a 3-2 victory at Thompson Arena on February 16. The teams are tied 5-5 over the last 10 games. Clarkson owns an 18-6-3 record over the Big Green at Cheel.
Haralds Egle leads the Knights in scoring against the Big Green with six points, including four assists. Jake Kielly is 2-2 vs Dartmouth with an .919 SP and a 2.37 GAA.

Vs Harvard - The Knights and Crimson will be meeting for the 126th time in their all-time series, which first began with a 2-1 Clarkson win in Lake Placid on December 28, 1935. Harvard, which leads the all-time series 58-55-12, holds a 3-1-1 advantage in the last five meetings and is 6-3-1 against the Green and Gold in the past 10 games.  Three of the last four meetings have been overtime contests. The Crimson took the first meeting this season 4-3 in Cambridge, MA on January 25, scoring the deciding goal 2:12 into the extra session. The Knights overcame a 4-1 deficit just six seconds into the third period to knock off the Crimson 5-4 in overtime in the 2018 ECAC Hockey semifinals on March 16. At Cheel Arena, last season, the rivals battled to a wild 6-6 tie on January 19. Harvard won the second regular-season meeting in 2017-18, 5-2 in Cambridge on February 17. Clarkson is 15-13-3 against the Crimson at Cheel. 
Jack Jacome has three goals and four assists for seven points through his first four games in the series. Jake Kielly posts a .877 SP, a 3.96 GAA and a 1-4-1 mark.

Scouting Dartmouth
Dartmouth is looking to string together some wins and solidified its position as one of the top eight teams in the ECAC Hockey standings and potentially move into a top-four spot. The Big Green own an 8-12-3 overall record and are in seventh place in the conference with a 7-7-2 league mark. Dartmouth is four points behind Clarkson for fourth place, but also just four points ahead of ninth-place Colgate. The Big Green have struggled since late January with just a 1-4-1 mark over their last six games. This past weekend, Dartmouth earned just one point at Thompson Arena, tying RPI 3-3 before losing to Union 3-1. Dartmouth's last win was a 4-1 victory over St. Lawrence in Hanover, NH on January 25.  Earlier in the season, Dartmouth had some big wins, defeating league powers Harvard (7-6ot) on October 27, Quinnipiac (5-1) on November 3 and Cornell (3-2) on November 30 at Thompson Arena. The Big Green are 3-6-1 in road games. 

Scouting Harvard
Harvard looks to be gearing up for a strong finish to the regular season, winning seven of its last nine games. The Crimson, who play at St. Lawrence on Friday, travel to the North Country ranked among the Top 20 teams in the nation with a 13-7-3 overall record. Harvard is tied with Clarkson for third place in the ECAC Hockey standings a with a 9-5-2 league mark. The Crimson are coming off a 5-2 victory over Boston University on Monday in the third-place game of the Beanpot tournament. Harvard, which defeated Union 5-3 in Cambridge, MA this past Saturday has lost just once (2-1 to Boston College on February 4) in its last seven games. Harvard is 4-3-1 on the road this season.
