Top 10 Clarkson Highlights - #5 Knights Alpine Squad Wins First Title at USCSA Nationals, Nordic Teams Take Third

In the past seven years, the Clarkson University Nordic Ski team has finished first at the USCSA Nationals four separate times, with the women claiming three titles and the men gaining one. In that same stretch of time, the Golden Knights' Alpine squad has consistently finished in the top five overall, competing against a field that Is twice the size of the Nordic groupings.

Though in the running on several occasions, the Clarkson Alpine Skiers have been too far off in time to truly challenge the regulars at the top of the standings. However, two great second runs down the mountain gave the Knights their first USCSA Championship in the giant slalom by an incredibly narrow margin. Clarkson's combined time of 6:50.56 was just eight-hundredths of a second faster than second place Sierra Nevada and less than a second quicker than third place Rocky Mountain College.

Sophomore Andrew Yoviene paced the Knights in the giant slalom and finished second among 106 skiers with a total time of 2:14.86. Freshman Thomas Daigle came in seventh overall thanks to taking third in the second run, ending up with a time of 2:16.19. Senior Greg Murray consistently was in the top 16 in both of his runs and came in 14th overall in 2:19.51. Each of those runs was vital to Clarkson's top of the podium finish.

Clarkson faltered somewhat in the slalom two days later, perhaps still euphoric from its giant slalom performance, but the Knights still concluded the nationals in fifth place overall. Four skiers finished in the top 30 for the Knights (out of 102 qualifiers), led by Murray's ninth-place showing. Daigle came in 21st, and juniors Ryan Riley (27th) and Colden Mrak (30th) also enjoyed consistent showings in both races.

On the cross country trails, the Golden Knights' men and women both finished in the top three for the fourth straight year, though Clarkson's women's two-year title run came to an end. Junior Ana Witkowski placed second among 37 competitors over the week thanks to three top-six finishes, including two second-place showings, to pace the Knights. Freshman Bridget Wangler was in the top seven in all three events to take fifth overall. For the men, junior Charles Maitland did not qualify for the overall standings because he missed one event, but he still placed third in the 7.5K Freestyle and 15K Classic runs. The top overall finisher for the Knights came from senior Peter Mallery, who took 11th among 49 qualifiers.
