Top 10 Clarkson Highlights - #4 CU Women's Lax Earns First Postseason Appearance in 40-Year History

Since Ben Gaebel took over as head coach of the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team in 2013, the Golden Knights have established new standards nearly every year. Under Gaebel, the Green and Gold have reached double figures in wins four times, something that never occurred in the previous 34 seasons. Clarkson has set new standards on offense, defense, gained its first all-region selection, its first conference player of the year, and its first winning record in the Liberty League, one of the toughest conferences in the country.

But it wasn't until 2018 that the Golden Knights finally earned a postseason appearance. Two seasons ago the Knights won two-thirds of their league games, but a tiebreaker in a stacked league had Clarkson outside looking in. Compliments of one of the best defenses in the league and one of the top offenses in the conference as well, the Golden Knights claimed a spot in the conference tournament.

The headline of the season came in early-April during a near whiteout. Despite a 45-minute delay at the half that required plows to remove snow from Hantz Turf Field, the Golden Knights defense was on full display against nationally-ranked William Smith. Clarkson held the two-time defending conference champions to just four scores in a 9-4 win, making the Knights the only team to beat the Herons in the last three seasons in the Liberty League, a feat the Green and Gold accomplished in both 2016 and 2018.

Although she was held scoreless in the win over William Smith, junior Jaid Baytos finished the season with a  team-best 69 points, the fifth-highest total in program history, and her 51 goals made her just the fourth player in the program's 40 seasons to eclipse 50 in a season. Proven by a pointless outing against William Smith, Clarkson's offense was clearly more than just Baytos. Six players scored 17 goals or more, and seven surpassed 20 points. Both Baytos and senior Taylor Collins joined Clarkson's 100-point club, a group that will become even more crowded next season. Rising juniors Katei Sergeant (76 points), Abby Collins (72), and Emma Andrews (62) each surpassed their point totals from 2017 and are poised to reach the century mark in 2019.

The Golden Knights assured themselves of a winning record for the third straight season with an equally outstanding defense, one that ranked 31st in the nation in goals against average (7.89 gpg). Samantha Gladd ranked among the conference leaders in goals against average (8.58), save percentage (.508) and saves (125). Rising junior Stephanie Scaia ranked third on the team in caused turnovers (20) and gained all-league honors for the second straight season, joining Baytos, Sergeant, and both Collins sisters on the Liberty League All-Star squad.
