Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Clarkson Battles Back for 1-1 Tie in Season Opener

As defending NCAA Champion and the number 1 team in the preseason polls, the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team expects to get the best effort from its opponent every game, and that is exactly what the Golden Knights got in the season-opener on Friday night in Boston. Despite being outshot and falling behind to 8th-ranked Northeastern, the Knights battled back and gain a 1-1 overtime tie against the Huskies in Matthews Arena.

"Tonight was a good start to the season for us against a good Northeastern team," said Clarkson Head Coach Matt Desrosiers. "They did a good job putting pressure on us and making us have to work for everything. These types of fast-paced games at the beginning of the year will definitely help us improve quickly. I'm sure tomorrow's game will bring much of the same excitement."

Senior goaltender Shea Tiley (Owen Sound, ONT) came up with a big effort, making 31 saves and junior Loren Gabel (Kitchener, ONT) scored Clarkson's lone goal off of 23 shots.

After a scoreless first period, Northeastern struck quickly in the middle frame as Shelby Herrington knocked in a shot at the top of the crease just 22 seconds into the period.

With less than seven minutes to play in regulation, the Knights' top returning scorer, Gabel found a loose puck at the side of the net and slipped in her 41st career goal. Junior defenseman Josiane Pozzebon (Bourget, ONT) and freshman Elizabeth Giguere (Quebec City, QUE) assisted.

Along with the solid play between the pipes by Tiley, Clarkson's shorthanded unit came up big, killing off all four of Northeastern's power-play opportunities, including the last one in the final two minutes of overtime. The Knights did not score on their lone power play of the night.

Brittany Bugalski made 22 saves for the home team.

Clarkson and Northeastern will conclude their weekend series in Boston on Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. faceoff.
