CU Volleyball Preview - at Oswego State (10/4/2016)

It was a much deserved 10-day break from competition for the Clarkson University Volleyball team, but the Golden Knights didn't appear to need it having won eight of their last nine matches. The Green and Gold will start the second half of the 2016 season on Tuesday when they head to Oswego State to take on the Lakers in a non-league match.

The Golden Knights enter Tuesday's match with a record of 11-4 overall, having lost only once since September 11th. Clarkson has won 17 of the 36 all-time meetings against the Lakers, including seven of the last eight matches. The two teams last met in 2009, with Clarkson coming away with a three-set victory. Only two of the 36 matches have occurred in the 25-point era.

After two years of tutelage behind some of the best offensive players in the region, junior Rachael Aird has emerged as Clarkson's top offensive threat. Aird has provided offense from both the middle and the outside, striking for 3.55 kills per set (third in the Liberty League) and a .272 hitting percentage (seventh in the conference). Freshman Rachel Reusch has also given a spark to the Clarkson offense with a league-leading .339 hitting percentage with 2.09 kills per set. She has also chipped in 0.79 blocks per set, third in the conference. Senior Katrina Lane has also tossed in 1.80 kills, 2.26 digs, and 0.41 blocks per set. Sophomore setter Jillian Saenz has delivered a team-best 21 aces and also runs the offense to the tune of 9.04 assists per set. Freshman libero Kate Isaksen is third in the conference with 5.73 digs per set.

The Lakers enter Tuesday's match with a record of 9-7 overall and are also coming off a lengthy break with two losses in three matches in SUNYAC play the final weekend of September. Ariel Murawski leads the team in both kills (2.60 kps) and hitting percentage (.286), but she is the only player for the Lakers to top the team in two categories. Alison Sullivan is the team leader in blocks (0.79 bps) and Jessica Long is the top contributor in the category of digs (3.00 dps). Lauren Edwards and Lindsay Champitto split setting duties, averaging 4.02 assists and 3.71 assists per set, respectively. Both also average a little over two digs per set. Megan Russell (1.65 kills per set, .256 hitting percentage, 0.67 blocks per set) and Emma Moriarty (1.78 kills per set, 0.37 blocks per set) also add to the offense, as does Alison Berger's 0.43 aces per set.
