Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Knights' Nine-Match Win Streak Ended by William Smith

Potsdam, NY – The service game that has seen the Clarkson University Volleyball team have huge advantages over its opponents came up short on Saturday, as William Smith had a plus-nine against the Golden Knights on Saturday afternoon. That was enough to help the Herons extend their winning streak to four while ending Clarkson's run at nine straight matches, with scores of 25-17, 25-20, 25-22.

The Golden Knights lost for the first time in three weeks, falling to 12-3 overall while William Smith edged forward to 11-2. Clarkson is now 2-1 in league play while William Smith is 3-0.

In the first set, the Herons scored 10 of the first 15 points, forcing the Knights to take an early timeout, but Clarkson clawed back and evened the tally at 12-12. Each time that Clarkson made a run, however, the Herons had an answer with a few points to return the lead to a few, including a five-point run at the conclusion of the set that saw Cassidy Breuer record two kills and a block.

Set two again saw the Herons start strong, going up 13-7 after an ace from Arielle Newsome. Although Clarkson trimmed the margin to four on a kill by Conley Burns (14-10), William Smith scored four straight, capped by a kill by Taylor Williams. Clarkson won six of the next seven points and then clawed back to within two (21-19) after another kill by Burns, but the Herons had enough to hold on for a second set victory.

The third set was a repeat of the first two, as once again William Smith built an early lead (11-6), thanks to three straight attack errors by the Knights. Clarkson got back to within two briefly and was in striking distance late at 21-19 when Conley Burns recorded a kill and Jordyn Leader notched an ace. William Smith responded with a kill, ace, and kill, to push it to match point, but three straight kills from Amelia Bartfalvi, Chase Chudoba, and Burns gave the Knights life at 24-22. Unfortunately, a set out of bounds ended the threat and the contest.

Ainslie Reimer had 11 kills and just two errors on 26 swings for the Knights, while Bartfalvi added seven kills. Brianna Hale posted 25 assists, Izzie Piano had 11 digs, and Olivia Baxter chipped in 10 more digs.

For William Smith, Cassidy Breuer had 12 kills, 10 digs, and a pair of aces while Arielle Newsome had a 7-0-11 line on offense, two aces, and three block assists. Emily Fulton notched eight kills and 13 digs and Maren Hunt had nine kills. Delainy Williams recorded 35 assists and Kali Vanderhoof led the defense with 16 digs.
