Knights Come Up Short in Sweep at Vassar

Poughkeepsie, NY – Every time that the Clarkson University Volleyball built a lead, Vassar College had an answer, as the Golden Knights suffered a 3-0 defeat (25-17, 25-19, 25-19) in Liberty League play on Friday night.

The Golden Knights saw their conference record evened at 2-2 and fell to 12-4 overall, while Vassar edged forward to 7-8 and 2-1. Clarkson plays a key match tomorrow when it visits Union College.

In the opening set, the Golden Knights had a handful of two-point advantages, leading by that many at 13-11 and still holding a 14-13 edge following a Vassar service error. However, Vassar went on an 8-0 run, causing Clarkson to take two timeouts in an attempt to halt the run. Eventually, block assists from Brianna Hale and Chase Chudoba put an end scoring stretch by Vassar, but it was short lived as Vassar finished the match with an eight-point advantage thanks to 14 kills in the game.

Set two was similar to the first in that the two teams played tightly for the majority of the time up to the midway point. Clarkson held a pair of three-point advantages at 5-2 and 9-6 and still led by one (15-14) following a kill by Chudoba. Vassar then took advantage of Clarkson miscues on the next three points to take the lead, something that the Brewers would not relinquish. After a kill by Conley Burns pulled Clarkson within two (21-19), Vassar scored four straight off an ace, two straight blocks, and then a kill by Holland Kaplan.

Although Clarkson had early leads in the third, Vassar was ahead by the teams had reached double digits and maintained a modest margin throughout the set. Clarkson was within one on three occasions late in the contest, including 20-19 after an ace from Izzie Piano. Again, Vassar was able to find the extra gear when needed, getting a side out on a setting error and then ending the set and match, bookending aces around two kills to close out the night.

Ainslie Reimer and Chase Chudoba each had seven kills to lead Clarkson's offense and Brianna Hale had 19 assists and 13 digs. Olivia Baxter also recorded 11 digs and Izzie Piano posted five aces.

For Vassar, Holland Kaplan notched 12 kills and Erin Lovett hit .348 (8-0-23). Francesca Medrano had 29 assists and Riley Huang recorded 18 digs and three aces.
