Union Sweeps Knights in League Play

Schenectady, NY – Much like its match against Vassar on Friday, the Clarkson University Volleyball team was unable to stop runs at key moments in Saturday's tilt against Union College, as the Garnet Chargers downed the Golden Knights in three sets (25-21, 25-21, 25-20).

The Golden Knights fell to 12-5 overall and 2-3 in Liberty League contests while Union moved to 13-6 and 2-2. Clarkson will take a weekend break from league contests, heading to Pennsylvania in mid-October.

Clarkson had leads in each of the first two sets in the early going, but each time saw Union go on a roll that allowed the home team to take the lead. In the first set, the Knights led 8-6 only to watch the Garnet Chargers rattle off 10 straight points, including the last three on kills by Kayla Martinez Cartagena. Clarkson got back within five on a few occasions and even picked up three straight points late to put a scare into Union, but Maddie McCarron posted a kill to close out the set, the 21st kill of the set by the Garnet Chargers.

Set two was a similar start, as Clarkson led 8-5, but Union rallied to tie the set at 12 and then took the lead 13-12. The Garnet Chargers did not slow down from there, getting block assists twice when the Knights really needed the point to get some momentum. Again, Clarkson attempted to rally late following a kill from Ainslie Reimer that pulled the Knights within three, but Johanna Melhorn picked up the kill to close out the game.

Union looked to run away with the third set, winning eight of the first 10 points, but this time it was Clarkson that would rally. The Knights came all the way back to tie the set at 14 and then again at 15 and 16. Union won the next four points, getting kills from Melhorn and Georgia Pinciaro and then a block from Melhorn to make it 20-16. The teams traded points from that point on and Shea Ringel's kill ended the match.

Union hit .319 overall and averaged nearly 18 kills per set (53-16-116) while Clarkson hit .212 (36-14-104). Chase Chudoba led the Knights with 13 kills while also adding four blocks and Jordyn Leader posted eight kills for the Green and Gold. Emma Cortez scored five aces, Brianna Hale had 28 assists, and Olivia Baxter notched 14 digs.

On Union's side, Kayla Martinez Cartagena had 14 kills and Georgia Pinciaro picked up 10 kills. Allie Kronenberg posted 39 assists and Charlotte Pernisie recorded 10 digs.
