Knights Drop Pair of Five-Set Matches in PA

Scranton, PA – It was a long trip to Pennsylvania and an equally long day for the Clarkson University Volleyball team as the Golden Knights went to five sets twice, unfortunately dropping both to DeSales (12-25, 15-25, 25-15, 25-18, 15-11) and Scranton (25-17, 25-22, 22-25, 23-25, 15-10).

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 12-7 on the year. Clarkson returns to Liberty League action next weekend with its final home games of the regular season, facing RIT on Friday and Ithaca on Saturday.

Clarkson started off hot against DeSales, posting impressive offensive numbers in the opening two sets to gain an early 2-0 lead. The Knights topped 15 kills in each of the first two sets and posted attack percentages above .300 in each. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs offense started slow, combining to hit just .042 (16-13-71) in the first two games, creating two lopsided losses in those sets.

However, DeSales found its offensive footing by the third set, hitting 16-2-47 (.298), and the defense caught up in the fourth set, forcing the Knights to take many more swings compared to the previous sets and weathering the Knights' offensive storm.

In the fifth set, DeSales jumped out to a 4-0 lead only to see Clarkson respond with the next five. The set was tied 8-8, but the Bulldogs got a kill from Alexis Hoyer and built a two-point lead on an attack error by the nights. That was enough space for DeSales, as it held at least a one-point advantage the rest of the way, closing things out with three straight points to end the match.

Conley Burns posted 21 kills and a .311 hitting percentage in the match and Ainslie Reimer picked up 16 kills. Chase Chudoba also notched 11 kills and hit .308. Brianna Hale had an impressive performance with 46 assists as well as 25 digs. Olivia Baxter had a season-high 30 digs in the match, while Izzie Piano chipped in 15 and Emma Cortez added 11.

Against Scranton, Clarkson played well enough in each of the first two sets, but nevertheless lost both as the Royals were humming along offensively. Scranton hit .414 in the first set (13-1-29) and had six aces which countered Clarkson's solid play (10-1-31, .290). In the second, the Royals service play dropped to two aces, but the offense still was striking at a high rate, recording 15 kills against just one error for a three-point win.

The third set saw the Knights surpass Scranton's offensive output, hitting .359 (17-3-39), though that surge was nearly matched by the Royals (14-3-39). That proved to be the difference in the set with Clarkson winning by three, including two of the final three points coming off kills by Jordyn Leader.

While Scranton maintained its kill rate with 16 more in the fourth set, its efficiency dropped considerably, down to a .163 rate. That combined with four service errors gave Clarkson further life. The Knights led for the first portion of the set, enjoying a three-point lead (15-12) near the midway point, but Scranton rallied to gain a three-point advantage of its own (21-18) and looked to close out the set. The Knights got back into it thanks to a kill and ace from Chudoba and tied it at 21 with a kill by Burns. A few points later, Burns ended it with a kill to send it to a fifth set.

In the deciding set, the Knights fell behind by eight as Scranton rushed out to an 11-3 lead. Clarkson rallied with four straight, but the gap was too much to overcome as the Royals finished off the game and the match.

Baxter matched her career-high in digs set in 2025, recording 33 in the game against Scranton, including the 1000th of her career along the way. Burns also stood out for the Knights for a second time on the day, recording 23 kills and a .354 attack percentage. Emily Alexander hit .400 (8-0-20) and Leader matched that rate (9-1-20). Hale posted 43 assists and also added five aces.
