Pozzebon's Goal Helps CU Women's Hockey Sweep Penn State

A power-play goal proved to be the difference as the fifth-ranked Clarkson University Women's Hockey team defeated Penn State 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in Cheel Arena.

Led by ninth-year head coach Matt Desrosiers and assistant coaches Britni Smith and Tony Maci, the Golden Knights open the season 2-0-0 while Penn State will leave Potsdam with a 0-2-0 record.

"I thought today was a much better game for us as we were able to get into more of a rhythm then we did yesterday," said Desrosiers. "Energy from the opening faceoff was good and we started playing more as a group. There are still  some things we can work on heading into next weekend's games against St Lawrence, but starting the season off with a weekend sweep is always great."

After exploding for four goals in the first thirty minutes of play on Friday, Clarkson was scoreless in the first period. The Green and Gold finally opened the scoring 2:37 into the second period. Corie Jacobson found Cayley Mercer all alone at the bottom of the right circle and Mercer was able to direct her shot into the back of the net.

Penn State answered with a goal of its own at 5:10 in the middle frame. On a Nittany Lion power-play, the puck was put in front of the Clarkson goal with players scrambling to control it. The puck fell to Brooke Madsen who scored to tie the game. Kelly Seward and Bella Sutton had the assists on the score.

As both teams went back and forth, a Penn State penalty gave Clarkson a man advantage and an opportunity to take the lead heading into the final period. The Golden Knights took advantage when Josiane Pozzebon's shot from the top caromed off the right post and in. Ella Shelton got the assist for her second assist in as many games.

Clarkson was able to hold Penn State scoreless in the third period to complete the weekend sweep.

The Golden Knights finished with a 36-25 advantage in shots. Clarkson was one of four on power-plays while Penn State converted one of six opportunities. Shea Tiley made 24 saves for Clarkson and Hannah Ehresmann made 34 stops for the Nittany Lions.

Clarkson's next game will be on October 7th, when the Green and Gold travel to Canton to face rival St. Lawrence.
