CU Women's Lacrosse Preview - vs. William Smith/Union (4/17-18)

With four games left in the Liberty League season, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team is still vying for one of the four conference playoff spots and this weekend's games against William Smith and Union would go a long way in securing a position in the post-season.

The Golden Knights enter the weekend with a record of 7-5 overall and 2-3 in Liberty League play, while William Smith comes in at 4-8 and 2-3 and Union is 7-3 and unbeaten in conference games at 5-0. Clarkson has never beaten either team, holding a record of 0-19 against Union and 0-14 against the Herons.

Friday's opponent is William Smith, and the Herons beat Clarkson 12-7 during the 2014 season. This year William Smith is led by Alexandra Bird, who is one of eight players in the conference to have accumulated 30 or more goals so far this year, having scored 35 points on 31 goals and four assists. Geneva Calder and Hannah Connolly have each chipped in 22 points and Emy Stratton has 19 points, thanks to 15 goals. Calder has also contributed 14 caused turnovers, the most on the team, and 25 groundballs, which ranks second. Other active players for the Herons are Allie Flaherty, who has 14 points, 25 draw controls and 11 caused turnovers, and Hayley Braun, who has produced a team-best 27 groundballs and also caused 12 turnovers. In the crease, Sarah Honan ranks second in the league in saves per game (8.64) and has a save percentage of .468 while allowing 11.04 goals per game. 

The Dutchwomen will be challenged by St. Lawrence on Friday before heading down the highway to play the Knights on Saturday. Union leads the conference in scoring (12.7 goals per game) and has a dynamic twosome in Maggie Comiskey and Emily Grail. Comiskey is second in the conference in points per game (4.50) with 15 goals and 30 assists, giving her the most assists per game (3.00) in the league. Grail leads the conference in goals per game (3.1) and has 37 points on 31 goals and six assists, but also ranks in the top five in the conference in groundballs (27) and caused turnovers (16). Jackie Hagopian has also contributed 19 points with 17 goals and two assists, and Haley Gould leads the team with 31 draws to go along with her 11 scores this year. Jessica Farland chips in all over the field with 14 points, 16 groundballs, 13 caused turnovers, and 10 draws. Defensively, Kim Grinhaus has seen nearly 90 percent of the time in the crease for the Dutchwomen and has a 9.60 goals against average and a .452 save percentage. 

Clarkson has received 100 points combined between two players so far as junior Christine Wright and sophomore Paige Fayette are among the league leaders in scoring. Wright leads the conference with 4.83 ppg thanks to 31 goals and 27 assists and Fayette has added 42 points on 31 goals and 11 helpers. Freshman Taylor Collins leads the team in both draws (31) and groundballs (24) and also has contributed 19 points on 18 goals and an assist. Sophomore Ashley Flick ranks fourth on the team with 16 points (14 goals, two assists). Emma Jeffery leads the team with 11 caused turnovers and also ranks third with 19 groundballs, while Mollie Simmons has 26 draws. In the Clarkson crease, Dani Tani boasts a goals against average of 9.57.
