Poughkeepsie, NY - With 18 runs over 16 innings, the Clarkson University Baseball team opened up offensively, but the Golden Knights could come away only with a split after a late rally in the opener by Vassar, suffering a 7-5 defeat in game one before outslugging the Brewers 13-9 in the nightcap on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights moved to 6-6 overall and 2-2 in the Liberty League and will take on the Brewers once again in another doubleheader on Sunday. Vassar moved to 5-4 overall and 2-1 in league play.

In the first game, Clarkson edged out to an early lead when David Wixted (Ballston Lake, NY) delivered a two-out double to score Tim Beninati (Schoharie, NY), who had reached on an error earlier in the inning. The Brewers tied the score in the fourth when Brett Zaziski led off the inning with a double and was sent home on a single up the middle from Nick Johnson. Clarkson responded in the top half of the fifth as Matt Jenack (Massena, NY) circled the bases by starting off with a walk, moving up to second on a sacrifice and advanced to third on a wild pitch. A two-out error by Zaziski allowed Jenack to come home for a 2-1 Clarkson lead. In the top half of the sixth, the Knights got three more runs that appeared to be purely insurance as freshman Dom Pirro (Liverpool, NY) plated pinch-runner Kyle Henchey (Rensselaer, NY), and Anthony Padrazo (Setaucket, NY) hit a two-out double to score Pirro and Chris Miller (Ballston Lake, NY). However, the 5-1 lead wouldn't hold up as Vassar scored six runs in the bottom half of the sixth. In the top of the seventh, Clarkson loaded the bases, but could not come through with the final hit to knot up the score.

David Wixted was 2-fo-4 in the game and Padrazo was 2-for-3. Jarrod Mattingly (Philadelphia, NY) was saddled with the loss, going five and one-third innings. For Vassar, Zaziski was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and Johson was 2-for-2 with three driven in.

In game two the Knights were busy with the bats, scoring three times in the first, plating two more in the third and one in the fourth, but Vassar nearly kept pace with a run in the bottom half of the second and three in the fourth. However, Clarkson pulled away in the top of the sixth with a six-spot. With the bases jammed and one out, Nolan Driscoll (Troy, NY) singled through the right side to start the scoring. Another run came home on an error, and David Wixted drove a double to clear the bases. He then came bounding home on a John Coleman (Potsdam, NY) single for the sixth run of the frame. Vassar came through with five more runs in the next three innings to cut into the lead, but the Knights added one more in the top of the ninth to assure the win.

Eddie Miller (Lake Grove, NY) picked up his second win of the season, scattering nine hits over six innings. Coleman came on in relief and allowed just a single earned run in the final three innings to hold off the late charge of the Brewers. Wixted finished 1-for-4, but drove in three and scored two more. Coleman and Jenack each went 2-for-5 and Driscoll was 2-for-4 while Chris Miller went 2-for-6. Pirro went just 1-for-2, but reached base on four other occasions as he walked twice, was hit by a pitch, and gained a spot on the bases thanks to an error. For the Brewers, Zaziski went 3-for-6 with four runs driven in, Johnson was 4-for-6, and Bradley Kendall went 3-for-5.
