Poughkeepsie, NY - On two occasions the Clarkson University Baseball team rallied in its last at bats, but only once did the Golden Knights muster enough offense to overcome its opponent, splitting a doubleheader for the second straight day against Vassar College by winning the opener 8-4 and falling 6-4 in the nightcap Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their record stay at .500 by moving to 7-7 overall and 3-3 in the Liberty League, while the Brewers stayed a game above the midway point at 6-5 overall and 3-2 in conference games. Clarkson looks to play St. Lawrence in a pair of doubleheaders next weekend.

In the opener, Vassar and Clarkson exchanged runs for the first few innings, with the Brewers getting on top in the upperhalf of the second inning and the Knights knotting things up in the bottom half. Chris Miller (Ballston Lake, NY) led off the inning with a single to left and was brought home by a double to left by Matt Jenack (Massena, NY) to make the score 1-1 through two frames. In the third, Bradley Kendall singled up the middle and scored on a throwing error to give Vassar a 2-1 edge, but Clarkson picked up a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Senior David Wixted (Ballston Lake, NY) walked to lead off the inning and John Coleman tripled him home to tie the game, and Miller delivered a two-out triple to allow Coleman to jog home. The lead was short-lived, however, as Jason Garfinkel hit a two-run homer in the top of the fourth to give Vassar a 4-3 lead.

In the bottom half of the sixth inning, Dom Pirro (Liverpool, NY) walked to start the frame and Miller added a sacrifice bunt to put the tying run in scoring position. Nolan Driscoll (Troy, NY) then sent Pirro to third with a single and Jenack followed with a single to center to tie the game at 4-4. Tim Beninati (Schoharie, NY) then tripled home Driscoll and Jenack for a two-run lead and John Coleman (Potsdam, NY) later singled to center to score Beninati. Dan Lenney (Clifton Park, NY) ended the barrage when he singled home Anthony Padrazo (Setaucket, NY) for an 8-4 edge.

John Coleman finished 2-for-4 with two runs driven in and Miller was 2-for-2. Jenack also had two hits in three at bats and drove in a pair of runs. Greg Jasek (Chittenango, NY) scattered 10 hits and didn't issue a walk over seven innings to pick up the win. For Vassar, Kendall, Nck Johnson and Brooks English each had two hits in the opener.

In game two, Vassar scored a run in the third and another in the fourth before scoring two runs in the fifth. Brett Zaziski started things off with a double and was sent home on a double by Johnson and English followed with a single to give the Brewers a 4-0 edge. They tacked on another in the seventh before Clarkson finally got on the scoreboard. Beninati singled and was lifted for a pinch-runner as Wixted tripled to plate the first run. John Coleman then lifted a sacrifice fly for the second run. In the top of the ninth, Vassar made it 6-2, but Clarkson would not go away quietly in the bottom half of the ninth. Bobby Derico (Watervliet, NY) led off with a single and Wixted walked, and both players moved up on a wild pitch. Coleman added another sacrifice fly to make it 6-3 and Dom Pirro then singled and Wixted came around on a throwing error. However, that was all Clarkson could muster, falling by two runs.
