Clarkson Suffers Loss to St. Lawrence

Coming off two close losses on the road over the weekend, the Clarkson University Women’s Lacrosse team battled archrival St. Lawrence University tough in the first half of Tuesday night’s game at Hantz Turf Field, which opened a four-game home stand, but the Saints pulled away in the final 30 minutes to gain a 13-5 victory in Liberty League play.

The Saints (5-4, 2-1 Liberty League) took a 2-0 lead to start the game on a pair of goals by Brigid Hurley, but the Golden Knights answered back with tallies by senior Saryn Campbell (West Bolton, VT) and junior Katie VanDeValk (Baldwinsville, NY) to make it a 2-2 game with 7:50 left in the first half.

St. Lawrence answered back with two goals by Alanna Piroli to take a 4-2 lead at the break.

Clarkson opened the second half with a score by junior Alyssa Cristaldi (North Syracuse, NY), but that was as close as the Green and Gold would get the rest of the game as the Saints ran off six unanswered goals to hold a 10-3 lead with 10:50 left to play. St. Lawrence outscored the Knights 3-2 over the final seven minutes to seal the road victory.

Campbell led Clarkson with two goals. Freshman Cassie Grace (Potsdam, NY) also scored for the Knights.

Hurley led all scorers with four goals, while Piroli recorded four points on three goals and one assist. Stephanie O’Rourke also scored three times for the Saints.

St. Lawrence outshot Clarkson 26-21 and held a 16-14 edge in ground balls.

Senior Hannah Walters (Amherst, NH) made seven saves for the Knights, while Paige Powell posted nine stops for the Saints through 53 minutes. Adden Cunningham made two saves on three shots over the final seven minutes for St. Lawrence.

At 3-5 overall and 0-3 in the Liberty League, Clarkson hosts RIT on Friday in a 4:00 p.m. game at Hantz Field.
