Clarkson Impressive in 4-1 Win at St. Lawrence

Junior Will Frederick (Allison Park, PA) scored two goals and recorded an assist and freshman Greg  Lewis (Mars, PA)  posted 34 saves as the Clarkson University Hockey team earned its fifth straight ECAC Hockey win over archrival St. Lawrence, skating to a 4-1 victory  before 2,622 North Country fans at Appleton Arena in Canton on Wednesday night.

The Golden Knights, who broke out of a four-game winless stretch (0-3-1), improved their record to 3-7-5 overall and move to .500 in ECAC Hockey play with a 3-3-1 league mark. Clarkson will face the Saints (7-6-2, 1-4-2) again on Saturday in a non-league encounter at the 1980 Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid at 7:30 p.m.

Clarkson played a solid opening 20 minutes against their archrival outshooting St. Lawrence 15-8 en route to a to a 2-0 first-period lead on the strength of a pair of goals from Frederick. The Knights opened the scoring at 6:01 when Frederick took a pass from freshman Jeff DiNallo (Aurora, ONT) along the right boards, skated to the side of the St. Lawrence net, putting a shot on goal that was turned aside by Saints’ goaltender Matt Weninger. Frederick followed up the rebound and jammed in the first goal of the game. Sophomore James Howden (Edgeley, SASK) set up the play with an outlet pass to DiNallo.

Frederick struck again late in the stanza tipping in a shot by senior defenseman Andrew Himelson (Monroe, NY) for his fourth goal of the year. Junior Jarrett Burton (Echo Bay, ONT) picked up an assist with a pass out of the corner to Himelson at the point.

With three power-play opportunities in the second period, St. Lawrence enjoyed the better of the play with a 17-6 shot advantage, but it was the Knights who capitalized on one of their chances to take a 3-0 lead through 40 minutes. Midway through the stanza, sophomore Joe Zarbo (Grand Island, NY) picked up a loose puck at center ice and fired in a shot from the top of the left circle for his sixth goal of the season at 12:19, extending his goal-scoring streak to four consecutive games.

Skating on its fifth power-play of the night, St. Lawrence finally connected with the man-advantage for its lone goal when George Hughes scored during a scramble in front at 4:27 of the third.

The Knights held off the Saints down the stretch and sealed the road victory with freshman Simon Bessette’s (St. Jean, QUE) third goal of the season with 3:24 remaining. Frederick set up the goal on a 2-on-1 rush.

St. Lawrence outshot the Green and Gold 35-31, but Lewis was on top of his game and posted a career-high 17 stops in the second period.

The Knights were 0-of-2 on the power play and killed off five of the Saints’ six man-advantage opportunity.
