Volunteer Assistant Coach (Analytics)
Timo Seppa ’89 returned to his alma mater as Volunteer Assistant Coach, Analytics for the 2021-22 season. Since 2016-17, Seppa has worked on a volunteer basis with Casey Jones and his coaching staff as Hockey Analytics Advisor. During this time, the Golden Knights reached the ECAC Championship game twice, including winning in 2019. Currently, Seppa is also in his fifth year as SQL Developer and Stats Analyst at the National Hockey League.
From 2014-15 to 2015-16, Seppa was Hockey Analytics Advisor for Quinnipiac. In 2015-16, the Bobcats won their only ECAC Championship and reached the NCAA Final. Seppa also consulted for the front offices of the New York Rangers in 2014-15 and 2015-16 and the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2012-13 and 2013-14.
A pioneer in advanced hockey statistics since 2009, when he joined Hockey Prospectus, Seppa became Managing Editor of Hockey Prospectus in 2009 and Editor-in-Chief in 2013. He was editor or co-editor of all six of their annual books from 2010-2016. He has written over 100 articles on hockey analytics, including for ESPN Insider. He has been a frequent radio guest, including on NHL Network Radio.
Seppa has spoken at several hockey analytics conferences, including presenting “Text Mining of Scouting Reports as a Novel Source for Improving NHL Draft Analytics” at the 2016 Ottawa Hockey Analytics Conference and "Applying Analytics and Microstats to NCAA Hockey" at the 2015 Ottawa Hockey Analytics Conference.
Graduating with a BS in Electrical Engineering from Clarkson (where President Tony Collins was once his professor), Seppa has an MA in English from Western Connecticut State and an MS in Business Analytics from Quinnipiac. He is currently enrolled in the Sports Leadership PhD program at Concordia University Chicago.
