A promising defenseman for the Golden Knights in the mid-1990s, Phil Lecavalier made a solid impact for Clarkson during his freshman year, but
injuries and illness restricted his playing time over the next three seasons, limiting his on-ice contributions.
As a rookie in 1993-94, the 5-11, 187 rearguard, skated in 32 of 34 games helping the Green and Gold to a 20-9-5 overall record. In the final game of the regular season, the Ile Bizard, Quebec native tallied his first collegiate goal, on a shot from the point, for the game-winner in a 4-2 victory over Brown as the Green and Gold wrapped up second place in the ECAC standings. He closed out the season with an assist in the ECAC Quarterfinal-series clinching 5-2 win over Colgate.
Lecavalier started out strong to start his sophomore campaign with one goal and two assists from the blueline in the first eight games, but was forced out of the lineup for the majority of the rest of the season with an injury. He skated in just 14 games overall as Clarkson posted a 23-10-4 record and claimed the conference regular-season title.
A nagging knee injury kept Lecavalier off the ice for all but 14 games in 1995-96, but he did make an impact with another key goal to end the regular season. Just two minutes into overtime, Lecavalier tipped in a rebound off a shot by classmate Todd White for the game-winning goal against Cornell before an overflowing crowd at Cheel Arena to clinch a home-ice berth in the upcoming league playoffs. Head coach Mark Morris’ squad finished the year at 25-10-3.
Injuries took their toll on Lecavalier and finally caught up to him in his senior campaign as he was forced to miss all but three games in one of Clarkson’s best seasons ever. The Knights posted a 27-10 overall record in 1996-97, won the ECAC regular season crown with a 17-5 league mark and earned the number-one seed in the East for the NCAA Tournament. Clarkson posted a valiant comeback in the NCAA Tournament, but lost a heartbreaking 5-4 game to Colorado College in Worcester, MA.
