TRADITION

Cross country became a varsity sport at Clarkson in 1965 under long-time head coach Jack Phillips. One of the best runners ever for Clarkson was Pete Rickert ‘80, who won the 1976 ICAC Championship as a freshman and competed at the 1977 NCAA National Championships. In more recent seasons, Alex Benway '12 and Dan Fritz '14 have competed in the NCAA National Championships, with Benway placing inside the top 50. On the women's side, graduate student Abigail Sullivan '18 became the first Clarkson female to compete at the NCAA National Championships. The Golden Knights hosted the Liberty League Championships three times since 2007, including twice on Munter Trails (2012, 2018).
