Knights Drop 3-1 Decision at St. Lawrence

Canton, NY – Three penalty kicks were called and two were converted, one for each team, as the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team suffered a 3-1 Liberty League loss to seventh-ranked St. Lawrence University on Wednesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their mark fall to 4-3-2 overall and 0-2-1 in conference games, while the Saints remained unbeaten at 8-0-1 and 3-0-0. Clarkson will be on the road again this weekend when the team takes on Hobart College.

Clarkson was able to get on the scoreboard early when the Knights turned a St. Lawrence chance into instant offense the other way. The Saints had a free kick that was snagged by Ian Burgos when SLU tried to cross the ball in but missed its header attempts. Once the players had cleared, Burgos set the ball down and kicked it into the midfield, where it was headed forward by Bodie Smith and then again by Josh Baraka, where it was played down by Zach Ruthfield. His pass was sent forward to Baraka, who was then taken down in the box by a pair of SLU players, resulting in a penalty kick. Cole Mueller took the kick, using a deke to fool Zach Amato going in the wrong direction and scoring at 2:52.

The Saints rallied with three goals in the first half, one just five minutes after Clarkson's score. Nicholas Petrone scored off a pass from Grant Gilmer, holding the ball in the penalty area and hitting a hard shot with his left foot that just snuck inside the post at 7:52. Petrone scored again at 19:29 when Clarkson goalkeeper Ian Burgos took a SLU player down in the box while diving for the ball.

Twenty minutes later, Eric Edmonds scored the Saints' third goal of the contest, as his shot which seemed ready to go low towards the post, got redirected when it hit a Clarkson defender sliding in front of the shot at 39:23.

Clarkson had chances in both the first half and second half, the best one in the opening half coming off the foot of Juan Pestarino following a corner kick when his shot went wide. In the second half, Zach Ruthfield had a one-on-one with SLU goalie Zach Amato, but his left-footed attempt was just tipped wide in the 66th minute.

The Knights had one more chance to get back into the game late when Paul Rolland was taken down deep in the box near the end line. Rolland then followed with a penalty kick opportunity, and he got Amato to guess wrong, but he just missed the post as his shot went wide with a little over three minutes remaining in the contest.

St. Lawrence held the edge in shots at 11-5 overall and 6-3 in shots on goal, though the second half was even at 2-2 for shots for each team. Clarkson had a 4-3 advantage in corners. Burgos made three saves for the Knights and Amato had two stops for SLU.
