Clarkson Offense Comes Up Big in 4-0 Win Over 13th-Ranked Hobart

Geneva, NY – Two early goals for the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team put Hobart College on its heels early, and the Knights capitalized on a man-advantage for the final 50 minutes of the contest to score twice more, gaining a 4-0 win over 13th-ranked Hobart College on Saturday afternoon.

The victory was Clarkson's first in league play, improving the Green and Gold to 5-3-2 overall and 1-2-1 in Liberty League play, while the Statesmen suffered just their second loss of the year, falling to 8-2-0 and 2-2-0. Clarkson hosts Bard College next weekend.

Although the shots were fairly even in the first half, Clarkson was the team putting them on frame and scoring on those chances as well. The first goal came in the eighth minute when Lars Stephensson and Matt Gatchell combined to force a turnover in the midfield, and it was Noah Hermanson who picked up possession and sent a long pass forward to Paul Rolland. Rolland was by himself against a few spread out Hobart defenders and got a shot off on the left side that was kicked away by Hobart goalkeeper Jake Hans, but the rebound came out into the middle of the box. Hermanson, who sprinted up field after his long pass, filled the gap and was able to put the ball away at 7:21.

Six minutes later, the Knights scored again. Matt Gatchell played the ball forward to Paul Rolland about 25 yards out, where Rolland, Hans, and another Hobart defender all collided, but the ball leaked out to a wide-open Zach Ruthfield, who shot the ball into an empty net at 13:15.

Hobart was put in a tough position when Brady Leitner, one of the team's top players, was sent off following a second yellow card. He was called for one in the 26th minute and then was whistled on another when he was jawing with a downed Clarkson player 13 minutes later. That put the Statesmen in a tough spot, as they played the remainder of the game with just 10 men on the field.

Clarkson took full advantage in the second half and tacked on two more goals. The third goal of the game for the Knights came on a long kick by Ian Burgos, finding Rolland in the midfield for a flick forward for a sprinting Matt Gatchell. The freshman out ran the rest of the Hobart defense and was able to sneak a shot just under the sliding Hans at 61:29. The final goal of the game came as Bodie Smith passed the ball forward to an open Zach Ruthfield, who eluded one defender, went around the goalkeeper and then was able to stand upright after another defender pushed him in the back right before his shot went in at 69:05.

Clarkson finished the game with a 16-14 deficit in shots, though Hobart trailed 8-6 in shots on goal and many of the attempts by the Statesmen came in the waning minutes of the game when the contest was already decided. Ian Burgos finished with six saves for the Knights and Hans had two saves before being relieved late.
