Knights and Bard Battle to 1-1 Tie

Potsdam, NY – Josh Baraka's last second chance sailed just over the crossbar, keeping the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team from unknotting a 1-1 tie against Bard College on Saturday as the squads battled to a draw in Liberty League action at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights saw their record go to 5-3-3 on the year and 1-2-2 in conference games, while Bard picked up its first point in conference play, improving to 7-4-1 overall and 0-4-1 in conference. Clarkson plays its final non-league contest of the year on Tuesday when its hosts SUNY Potsdam.

Challenging shots were infrequent in the first half, though Bard had a solid chance off the foot of Frankie Perera-Modica that was stopped in the 20th minute by Ian Burgos. The Raptors had another chance by Mateo Betelu that went a foot or two over the crossbar in the 35th minute.

Clarkson picked up the lead midway through the first half when Paul Rolland carried the ball deep and had his first shot attempt blocked. Fortunately for him and the Knights, the ball came right back to his foot and he was able to lift a pass back into the middle where Zach Ruthfield was waiting. The sophomore elevated and headed the ball into the net at 23:57 to put Clarkson up 1-0.

The Knights had a significant advantage in shots (14-3) in the second half, but it was Bard that was able to pick up the equalizer roughly 15 minutes after intermission. Aren Andrews came down the right side and carried the ball deep into the Clarkson end, sending a cross over to Mateo Betelu. His groundball shot knocked off the far post and snuck over the goal line at 59:23 to tie the game.

Over the last 20 minutes, Clarkson applied plenty of pressure in the Bard defensive end, but Jake Sudit was up to the task. He guarded the posts with diving saves and also was able to snare some troublesome crosses that looked like dangerous opportunities for the Knights. With the countdown on for the final seconds, Clarkson had a quick transition the other way, started with a long clearance by goalkeeper Ian Burgos. The ball was flicked in the wrong direction for Bard, allowing Baraka to break away and he had a solid look at the goal, but his attempt from about 10 yards out went a few inches above the crossbar as the teams settled for a tie.

Clarkson finished the game with a 19-8 edge in total shots and an 8-5 lead in shots on goal as well as a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks. Burgos made four stops for Clarkson and Sudit had seven stops for Bard.
