Smith Scores Twice in Knights 3-0 Win Over Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – Bodie Smith scored twice and Declan Sengbusch added another as the duo of first years combined for all of the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team's goals in a 3-0 non-league win over SUNY Potsdam on Tuesday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 6-3-3 overall on the season while the Bears evened their mark out at 6-6-2. Clarkson returns to league play on Saturday, travelling to take on Rensselaer.

Just 10 minutes into the game, lightning was detected in the area, creating a 30-minute delay for the teams. Fifteen minutes after being sidelined due to the weather, Clarkson was able to strike first.

The Golden Knights scored their first goal off a quick transition following a punt from the SUNY Potsdam goalkeeper. The ball was missed in the midfield by a Potsdam player, allowing Lars Stephensson time to step into a header off the bounce and play it forward. Zach Ruthfield brought the ball down to his feet quickly and pushed the ball into space for Bodie Smith, who outran the Potsdam defense. With one touch and just the goalie to beat, Smith shot to the far post and it banged off the inside and over the line to make it 1-0 in favor of the Knights at 25:35.

Clarkson had other chances, just missing wide and high on a few other attempts, but the majority of its chances came in the second half. Jay Jezioro's shot off a corner was denied early in the second half and Alper Celik's had a shot near the midway point of the frame that was denied by a Potsdam defender, saving a potential score at 67:50.

The Knights did tack on some insurance scores in the final three minutes, with two goal separated by only 10 seconds. The first came when the ball was played up to Bodie Smith, who waited for a moment and heel kicked it backward to Paul Rolland. Instead of taking a shot, Rolland waited for Smith to claim open space, which he did, allowing the freshman to punch in his eighth goal of the season and second of the contest at 87:03. Off the ensuing kickoff, Potsdam played the ball backwards, but Declan Sengbusch got in the way when the Bears tried to kick the ball forward. Smith collected the ball and passed it forward to Sengbusch, but his first shot was denied by the Potsdam keeper. Unable to hold on to the ball, Sengbusch gained his own rebound and knocked into the open net at 87:13.

Clarkson finished with a 15-5 edge in total shots and an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal. The corner kicks were also in favor of the Knights at 7-4. Ben Sandoval had three saves for the Knights and James Kelm added five saves for Potsdam.
