Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Knights Suffer 2-1 Defeat at RPI

Troy, NY – A late score off a corner put the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team on the wrong end of a 2-1 decision against Rensselaer on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 6-4-3 overall and 1-3-2 in the Liberty League while Rensselaer solidified its spot in the conference standings at 3-1-2 in league and 5-5-3 overall. Clarkson is back in action on Tuesday when the team travels to take on Skidmore College.

Very few shots were attempted in the first half as each team registered only one attempt in the opening 45 minutes. Clarkson's chance came early on when Paul Rolland's header off a corner was right on the middle of the frame, but RPI goalkeeper Noah Churchill was right there to catch the ball chest high about five minutes into the contest. RPI's opportunity was an easier shot on goal and found its way into the back of the net as it came off a penalty kick. The play began off a long throw in from the left side which was headed further into play and to Alesio Barquin, where he was taken down a few yards inside the penalty area. That allowed Christopher McKinney to take his shot at the goal, with Clarkson goalkeeper Ian Burgos guessing correctly, but unable to reach the ball before it whistled past his hands at the left post.

Many of the shots in the second half were blocked as not many made their way to the goaltenders until later in the contest. Clarkson had a solid chance with about 14 minutes to go in the game when the Knights had a corner opportunity. The long pass found the head of Lars Stephensson at the far post and the shot would have gone in, but Churchill stopped the ball right at the line and fell to his the ground about a foot in front of the goal line, keeping the Knights down 1-0.

Clarkson did get on the scoreboard late in the game when Matt Gatchell sent a long pass down the left side line for Zach Ruthfield. The sophomore took his time to make a decision on his next path, deciding to go back into the center of the play and eluding his defender on the right. He then sidestepped another and took a hard shot with his right foot from about 18 yards away, hitting the opposite post and just keeping it over the line with only six-plus minutes remaining in the contest.

While the game appeared headed towards a 1-1 tie, the Engineers took advantage of a late chance off a corner. The ball sailed in from the left side and was touched softly twice by two Engineers, with the second touch coming off the foot of Sean Davis and having just enough pace to sneak over the line at 86:29.

Clarkson ended the game with a 15-7 lead in shots, but the margin was far smaller in terms of shots on goal at just 5-2. Clarkson's Ian Burgos played the full 90 minutes and finished with no saves while Churchill had four saves for the Engineers.
