Knights Settle for Tie at Skidmore

Saratoga Springs, NY - Lars Stephensson's volley in the final two minutes hit the underside of the crossbar but never cross the goal line as the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team battled to a 1-1 tie against Skidmore College in Liberty League action Tuesday evening.

The Golden Knights saw their record go to 6-5-3 overall and 1-3-3 in the Liberty League, while Skidmore's point pushed them to 2-2-3 in conference and 5-5-5 overall. Clarkson is at home against Ithaca on Saturday.

Clarkson controlled the play for the first 25 minutes of the half, holding the Thoroughbreds without a shot for that entire stretch while being able to get a goal on the scoreboard early. The Knights utilized some pressure in the midfield to create an opportunity, as freshman Matt Gatchell intercepted a pass just shy of the center line and quickly pushing the ball the other way. Gatchell took a handful of steps with the ball and passed it forward to Zach Ruthfield, who then carried it deep into the Skidmore defensive zone before sending a cross between the goal line and the six, locating Bodie Smith at the far post where he was able to tap the ball in for his ninth goal of the year, making it 1-0 at 4:39.

The Thoroughbreds were without a shot for the first 27-plus minutes of the contest, but that opening chance came close to tying the game. Though the shot itself wasn't particularly close to the goal, probably a half dozen yards or more high of the crossbar, the shot off the foot of Evan Riccelli caught the Knights challenging for the ball 25 yards away from the goal with the frame vacated by Ian Burgos as he attempted to chase the ball down.

The final 15 minutes of the half did see a few more chances for the Knights, but only a header from Smith, which went wide, was a true scoring opportunity. Clarkson concluded the half with a 5-2 lead in shots and a 3-0 edge in shots on goal while also holding a 2-0 advantage in corners.

Skidmore had a few chances around the 60-minute mark to tie up the score. Shortly before that point Nathan Gritzmacher had a shot go wide, and then the Thoroughbreds had two corner kick chances, the first getting cleared away quickly and the other getting knocked out of the air by Ian Burgos before being cleared. Bodie Smith nearly added another score to the Knights' tally when he was able to break free for a shot that was just tipped over the crossbar at 63:24. That was the first of a few solid runs from Smith that nearly resulted in a second Clarkson goal.

With about 18 minutes to play, Ian Burgos made the defensive play of the game for the Golden Knights when he tipped a volley shot by Colin Goodhines straight up to himself to make a save. Unfortunately, what could have been the play of the game became moot when Skidmore was able to tie the game with a little under 11 minutes to go. Smith Flickinger finished off a pass from Jed Dougherty at 79:14 after a cross from the top left of the box bounced around inside the six for a few moments, eventually getting knocked in by Flickinger.

Clarkson nearly won the game twice in the final three minutes. A shot from the top of the box by Zach Ruthfield required a diving save by Dante Fierro of Skidmore, and he was unable to hold on to the ball, as it had to be cleared by a Thoroughbred defender before the Knights could pounce on the rebound. Less than a minute later, another chance almost went in when Stephensson found himself in tight for a shot off a bounding ball. His attempt hit the bottom of the crossbar, but did not have enough spin or luck to go over the goal line.

Clarkson finished with a 12-8 edge in shots, a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal, and a 3-2 lead in corners. Ian Burgos made two saves for the Knights and Dante Fierro had three stops for Skidmore.
