Ruthfield Assists on All Three Goals in 3-0 Win Over Ithaca

Potsdam, NY – A goal in the 36th minute gave the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team the lead, and two goals in the final seven minutes secured the victory as the Golden Knights claimed a 3-0 win over Ithaca College on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights picked up a key victory and improved to 7-4-4 overall and 2-3-3 in the Liberty League while the Bombers fell to 8-3-7 and 1-2-5. With a win next weekend against Vassar, Clarkson clinches a playoff spot in the conference tournament. A loss or tie could still get the Knights in, but help around the league would be necessary.

While the play was for the most part even in the first half, Clarkson had a massive edge in the opening 45 minutes, recording nine against Ithaca's one shot in that stretch. Ithaca was content to let the Bombers try to create offense from the outer portions of the box and were able to clear passes away before anything developed.

The Golden Knights got on the board late in the first half when Zach Ruthfield carried the ball deep down into Ithaca territory, sending a cross just before the ball was going to roll out of bounds. The pass proved to be perfect as it went to the other side of the box and found the head of Leo Sochanek, who produced a sprawling header as he was parallel to the ground on the shot, converting at 35:42.

In the second half, Clarkson nearly picked up a goal from Ruthfield who had a break away against the Ithaca goalie, but Brayden Milbrandt was able to get a hand on the shot and keep the score 1-0.

Ithaca began to put pressure on the Knights defense in the final 20 minutes, holding the ball in the Clarkson end for extended periods of time, but not much was made of that possession. Edin Estrada had a solid attempt from about 20 yards out with nine minutes to go, but Clarkson keeper Ian Burgos dove to his right to make the stop and secured the ball without a rebound.

Clarkson picked up an insurance goal off a throw in with less than seven minutes remaining in the half. About midway down the line on Ithaca's right side, James Simmons got things going with the throw to Declan Sengbusch, who immediately passed it back to Simmons. He then found Bodie Smith about 20 yards out and one more pass got to Zach Ruthfield at the top of the penalty area. Ruthfield held and allowed time for Smith to get around the Ithaca defenders into space, and one pass put Smith wide open at about 10 yards out where he beat Milbrandt to make it 2-0.

The Knights closed out the game with one more goal in the final two minutes, quickly putting pressure on the Bombers in transition. A free kick from the left side by Ithaca went into the box, but it was headed out to the left side and Ruthfield once again picked up the assist. Passing the ball over the center line to Declan Sengbusch for a 1-on-1 with an Ithaca defender. Sengbusch won the initial foot race and had a half step on the defense, forcing Milbrandt to come out of the goal in an attempt to cut down the angle. Sengbusch had one more soft touch just before Milbrandt could close any further ground, and it knocked off the post in the 89th minute to make it 3-0.

Clarkson outshot Ithaca 16-3 overall and 9-2 in shots on goal while also holding a narrow 4-3 edge in corners. Ian Burgos picked up the shutout with two saves and Brayden Milbrandt had six stops for the Bombers.
