Knights Upended at Home, 3-1 Against Union

Potsdam, NY – Goals found the back of the net numerous times in the first 10 minutes, but it was relatively quiet after that for the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team and Union College, as the Golden Knights suffered a 3-1 loss to the visitors Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights dropped to 4-2-2 overall and 0-1-1 in the Liberty League, while Union won its first conference game of the year to move to 6-3-1 and 1-0-0. Clarkson takes on St. Lawrence University midweek and looks to pick up its first league win of 2026.

The highest scoring offense in the Liberty League showed how they do things in the first minute of the contest, immediately putting the Golden Knights in a hole. Joseph Carofano's shot from about 25 yards out was not fielded cleanly by the Clarkson defense either at the box or on the rebound, allowing Cauan Souza to step in and clean up the rebound just 1:00 into the game. Clarkson wasn't down and out for long, though, as the Knights tied the game just two minutes later. Clarkson had a throw in deep in the Union defensive end that was nicked away by the Garnet Chargers, but the ball fell to Lars Stephensson, who followed with a quick tough to Alper Celik, and the sophomore was able to finish off the play at 3:03, making it 1-1.

Union responded with a goal only six minutes later as the game appeared to be on its way to becoming a high-scoring affair. It was Union this time that had a long throw-in and was headed away by the Golden Knights, but that header dropped right to the foot of Souza. He followed with a touch pass forward to Carofano, and he finished with a left foot at 9:06.

That was it for the scoring in the opening half, though half of the shots on goal went in as each team posted three shots on frame in the first 45 minutes.

Shots on goal were even fewer in the second half, but Union converted its lone chance on frame with an insurance score midway through the period. David Dolores played the ball forward down the right wing for Dillan Akinc, and he carried the ball further into the Clarkson defensive end. Dolores sprinted down the field to fill the lane and was able to take a pass from Akinc and touched it over to Kofi Sarfoh, who finished off the goal at 63:17.

Clarkson ended the game with advantages in shots (10-6), shots on goal (5-4), and corners (5-3), but trailed on the scoreboard. Ian Burgos had one save for the Knights and Michael Karcher had four saves for Union.
