Canton, NY – Two early goals proved to be the difference as the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team claimed a 2-0 non-league win over SUNY Canton on Wednesday evening.

With the victory, the Golden Knights improved to 4-1-2 overall while SUNY Canton fell to 1-7-1. Clarkson returns to conference play this weekend when the team hosts Union College.

It took little time for Clarkson to assert its control of the game, controlling the ball in the middle of the field with crisp passes and showing patience before sending those passes deep into SUNY Canton defensive territory. The Knights would get on the board just eight minutes into the contest following a throw-in from the right side. The ball was headed around in the midfield before being settled by Marco Meirinho on the left side of the field. He then knocked a pass into the box, where Brody Frankowski was able to get a head on the ball about 10 yards outside of the goal, making it 1-0 at 8:14.

Less than three minutes later, the Knights scored again, with Zach Ruthfield collecting a pass near midfield and carrying the ball into the Canton end. He waited for things to align and sent a pass into open space, allowing Bodie Smith to pick a lane and rush to the ball, sending a groundball into the goal at 11:01.

Clarkson had two other solid chances on goal, one by Declan Sengbusch and another by Ruthfield, that were denied with solid saves by Braydn Bovee, and one more chance by Meirinho was also just off the mark by the right post. Later in the half, Josh Baraka was taken down in the box on the right side and was awarded a penalty kick. His attempt was stopped by the extended fingers of Bovee when the Canton keeper dove to his left and the Roos were just able to clear the ball before the Knights could regroup for another shot attempt.

In the second half, the Knights held SUNY Canton without a shot attempt, but only mustered a handful themselves as numerous scoring attempts were foiled by Canton defenders in the box. Marco Meirinho had a two shots go just wide and Daniel Jordao's attempt was high. Joel Alvarez had a shot on goal midway through the half, but Bovee scooped up the grounder. Bovee made one more save late in the game off a header near the six to keep Clarkson at two goals.

Smith's goal gave him six on the season, the most by a Clarkson first-year player since Marco Parisi in 2012, and his 13 points on the campaign are the most by a freshman Golden Knight since Carson Morey in 2001 (16 points).

Clarkson ended the game with a 13-2 lead in total shots and a 7-1 edge in shots on goal. The Knights also led in corners 9-4. Ian Burgos made one stop to secure the shutout, while Bovee had five stops for Canton.
