Knights Score Early and Often in 4-2 Win Over Rochester

Potsdam, NY – Scoring three times in the first 17 minutes of the contest, the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team built a significant early lead and then added one more goal late for some insurance as the Golden Knights posted a 4-2 non-league win over University of Rochester Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 3-1-2 on the season while Rochester slipped to 2-3-2 for the campaign. Clarkson completes its three-game non-conference stretch at SUNY Canton next Wednesday.

Clarkson made the most of its first-half opportunities scoring three goals on only four shots. The first came off a corner kick, but not off a cross, as the Knights played the ball short at an angle that gave Zach Ruthfield plenty of space to work and he launched a left-footed shot from roughly 25-yards out to put the Green and Gold up 1-0 at 8:38.

The Knights picked up another goal only four minutes later as the ball was kept in the Rochester defensive area for a bit, allowing the ball to end up on the foot of Matt Gatchell on the right side. He was able to dribble forward and have the defense run up to him, allowing him to pass through some traffic and find the foot of Paul Rolland, who followed with a ground ball to the near post at 12:54.

Clarkson tacked on another goal, again just four minutes after its previous score. Noah Hermanson kept the ball in on the left side line and sent a soaring ball forward for the Clarkson's forwards. The ball eluded one Clarkson player and a Rochester defender, but Alper Celik came in on a run to head the ball forward to himself and create a 1-on-1 with the goalkeeper, tapping the ball past the last Rochester player at 16:53 for a 3-0 Clarkson advantage.

Rochester would not let Clarkson run away with the game, however, scoring twice early in the second half to put pressure on the Knights. The first goal came off a direct kick from about 50 yards out as Finn Basobas O'Carroll started the play with a lofting pass near the top of the box. Mateo Stremi was able to play it forward with one touch to Mikey Burke, and Burke finished with a header at 56:31. The second Yellowjackets' goal was also scored off a header. The ball found its way out to Kyle Wong at about 30 yards out and he hit a high pass into the box where Nico Ranieri was able to win with a header. That wasn't quite enough to get over, though, and Burke came in with another header to put the ball in at 68:34.

Rochester nearly tied the game with 15 minutes remaining but Daniel Steinacher's attempt with a tough angle near the goal line hit the post and bounced back out of harm's way for the Clarkson defense. That proved key for Clarkson when the Knights scored an insurance marker in the final five minutes of the contest. Clarkson had the ball on the far left side line where Marco Meirinho saw an opportunity and clipped a long pass into the middle for Bodie Smith. The soaring ball was deflected by a Rochester defender, but it landed on the feet for Smith and he had a 1-on-1 with the goalie, finishing off the play with his right foot to the right post at 86:06.

Clarkson and Rochester tied in terms of total shots at 9-9, with the Knights having a narrow 6-5 lead in shots on goal and the Yellowjackets owning an equally narrow 6-5 lead in corners. Ian Burgos finished with three saves for Clarkson and Aidan Hartman had two stops for Rochester.
