Knights Restrain Thoroughbreds Comeback Attempt in 3-2 Win

Potsdam, NY – Three different goal scorers, all first-timers in 2026, came through for the Clarkson University Women's Soccer as the Golden Knights were able to hold on for a 3-2 Liberty League win over Skidmore College on Wednesday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 4-2-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the Liberty League, while the Thoroughbreds dropped to 1-2-1 and 0-1-0. Clarkson will continue league play on Saturday when it heads to RIT.

Both teams had shots on goal in the first 45 seconds of the game, as Skidmore came down for a low shot on the near goal post on its opening possession, but after a punt down field the Knights had a hard shot on goal as well. The Thoroughbreds had more scoring chances in the first half, constantly putting pressure on the Clarkson defense, but Emma Fleming seemed to be in the right place at the right time on all of the shots on goal, with the Golden Knights' defense also clearing away the ball before a second chance could be had.

Shortly after a throw-in near midfield, the Knights were able to put together an offensive push that resulted in a goal. Ella Intrieri picked up the ball and in the middle and sent a pass to the right for Thea Armistead, who then carried the ball in a little deeper and waited for her teammates to fill the lanes in front. Only 20 seconds after having entered the game, Gabrielle Cyganik's fresh legs proved key, as she was able to hit a left-footed strike past Sophia Sayers at 29:50 to make it 1-0.

The goals came quickly at the start of the second half with Clarkson scoring twice in the first 10 minutes and then Skidmore answering with a goal of its own. The second goal of the game for the Knights came off a scrum in front. Riley Irvin had a direct kick from roughly 35 yards out with the ball bouncing around several times before Kate Walsh crashed the net and knocked in a rebound at 49:38.

Five minutes later it was Emily LeBlanc scoring from nearly the same spot that Irvin had put the ball in the mixer, though it was played back from Maddison Haver and allowed LeBlanc to step into it, scoring from way out on a ball that sailed over the outstretched arms of the Skidmore goalie at the 54:20 mark.

Skidmore's offense responded with two goals over the next 10 minutes, breaking through on the promise it had shown in the first half. The first goal came only 40 seconds after Clarkson's third when Brooke Zienowicz crossed a ball from the right side and into the box for a shot by Bryn Ryan. Nine-plus minutes later, the Thoroughbreds scored on a restart from the midfield into the center of the field, as the ball was played forward to Jillian Foley about 40  yards out and she was able to find Abby Lewis on a run on the right side, with the senior scoring at 64:21, making the score 3-2.

The Thoroughbreds nearly tied the game with a little over seven minutes remaining when Fleming went to the ground to stop either a shot or cross, but couldn't completely corral it, allowing a shot by Abby Lewis that went just wide and gave the Knights a goal kick.

Skidmore finished with a 21-8 margin in shots (12-5 shots on goal) and 6-5 corner kick chances. Fleming made 10 saves for the Knights, while Sayers had two saves in the first half for Skidmore and Kendall Livingston made no saves in the second half for the Thoroughbreds.
