Knights See Three-Game Win Streak Halted at New Paltz

New Paltz, NY – Following three straight wins on the road, the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team could not quite close out the run on a winning note, falling 2-0 to SUNY New Paltz on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their record dip to 3-2-0 overall while the Hawks improved to 3-1-0. Clarkson is back at home on Saturday, opening up Liberty League play against Skidmore College.

Scoring opportunities were few and far between in the first half, but the Hawks were able to capitalize on a Clarkson miscue to get on the board in the 36th minute. Rushing through the midfield, one of the New Paltz players was able to tip the ball forward and then split two Clarkson defenders to create a one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Emma Flemming was able to get to the ball first and played it with her foot in an attempt to create a quick counter going the other way, but the ball went directly to Grace Norelius. From about 25 yards out on the left side of the field, Norelius chipped a shot over Flemming, who was still near the penalty stripe, and the ball bounced in just ahead of the Clarkson defenders rushing back to clear the attempt.

New Paltz knocked in another goal early on in the second half. Collecting the ball near midfield, the Hawks played it down the right sideline for Samantha Gemmo, who dribbled deeper into the corner and drew extra defenders towards her. That created enough space in the middle as Gemmo crossed the ball back into the center of the box, finding Abby Macleod at the six, and she volleyed the ball in off her foot to the opposite post at 57:32.

Both of Clarkson's shot attempts in the second half came from Emily LeBlanc, but New Paltz keeper Jess Centeri was up to the task both times and kept the Knights off the board.

New Paltz finished with a 13-4 edge in shots (6-2 in shots on goal) and also held a 4-1 lead in corners. Flemming made four saves for the Knights and Centeri stopped two shots for the Hawks.
