Knights Knot Up with RIT, 1-1

Potsdam, NY – Two goals separated by less than three minutes proved to be all the scoring on Saturday, but each team found the back of the net to create a 1-1 tie between the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team and RIT in the Liberty League opener at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights moved to 2-1-1 on the season with the tie, while RIT saw its record go to 0-2-2. Clarkson is on the road on Wednesday, taking on former conference member Hamilton College.

Only a handful of shots were attempted in the opening half as Clarkson was content to hold the ball and wait for RIT mistakes to create its chances. The Tigers had a good attempt less than eight minutes in when the Tigers patiently waited for the lanes to fill with teammates, giving Axel Jackson a good look at the net with Ian Burgos making a sprawling save near the post at 7:27. Eight minutes later it was Zach Ruthfield with a shot from 30 yards out that found the center of RIT goalkeeper Kristian Dobbek, and the Knights had another chance with Dobbek was able to just nip Paul Rolland's attempt at the top of the box in the 34th minute.

Clarkson got on the board after a couple of near misses at the start of the second half. In a stretch of just 30 seconds, Cole Mueller nearly converted on a direct kick from 20-plus yards out when his shot sailed wide, and Zach Ruthfield followed up with a run deep into RIT territory that saw his shot tipped over the crossbar. On the ensuing corner kick, the initial attempt was knocked around and eventually found the foot of Declan Sengbusch, who settled the bounding ball towards Bodie Smith, as the freshman converted by going high into the upper right at 54:17.

Less than three minutes later RIT tied the contest thanks to a solid run down the right sideline by Robin Giesing. Going deep into the corner, Giesing waited for his teammates to catch up before he made his cross, and he couldn't have timed it better when he sent the ball near the six for Gavin Culley, with Culley knocking the ball in on a header as Clarkson goalkeeper Ian Burgos couldn't quite get enough of his hand on it to keep the ball from going in at 57:11.

Clarkson finished with a 10-4 edge in shots and a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal. Corner kick chances were infrequent, as the Knights tried three and RIT was limited to only one. Burgos made one save for the Knights and Dobbek had four stops.
