Smith and Rolland Connect for Goals in Clarkson's 2-0 Win Over Oswego

Potsdam, NY – Freshman Bodie Smith scored early in the second half and Paul Rolland added an insurance goal in the final two minutes as the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team posted a 2-0 win over Oswego State to open up the 2026 fall campaign Tuesday evening at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights will be back at home this Saturday when the team takes on Plattsburgh State.

Although Clarkson had a 6-1 advantage in shots in the first half, only one was on target. Zach Ruthfield made some strong runs down the left side and had a few chances, but his attempts largely went just wide. Oswego's had just a single shot in the first 45 minutes and had four corner kicks, but the Lakers were unable to muster much offense off those chances.

Clarkson had a larger advantage in the second half, outshooting Oswego 10-3 and also owning a 4-1 advantage in corner kick chances. It was a strong individual effort that put the Knights on the board roughly eight minutes into the second half. Lars Stephensson earned possession in the Clarkson defensive end and James Simmons cleared the zone with a pass through the midfield. The ball found the head of an Oswego player, but bounced down to Bodie Smith. Despite players on both wings calling for the ball, Smith decided to keep it, splitting two defenders in the midfield and working his way forward, eventually taking a hard shot from outside the box about 20 yards away, with the ball sneaking just inside the post at 55:39.

There were a few near misses for the Knights in the second half as well as some solid runs by the Lakers, but Clarkson was able to pick up the win with a goal late in the contest. After a foul in the midfield, the Knights had a free kick to restart the play, going wide on the right side. From there, Gavin Jell emerged with a little bit of space down near the end line and sent a cross in front, where Paul Rolland was able to knock the ball in with a bouncing header at 88:37.

Clarkson closed the game with a 16-4 advantage in shots, though it was only a 5-2 margin in terms of shots on goal. Both teams posted five corner kicks. Ian Burgos earned the shutout with two saves and Kyle Rose had a pair of saves for the Lakers.
