Goal in Waning Moments Lifts Clarkson Past Plattsburgh State, 2-1

Potsdam, NY – A late goal from Bodie Smith, his second game-winner in as many games, helped the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team rally in the waning minutes to claim a 2-1 win over Plattsburgh State on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights moved to 2-0-0 on the season with the win as the team's next matchup remains against SUNYAC foes when they go on the road to face Cortland State in a 7:00 pm tit in Central New York.

The game was fairly even in the first half with Plattsburgh enjoying a modest 4-3 advantage in shots but a 5-1 lead in corner kick chances. The Cardinals did not need one of those corner opportunities to score the game's opening goal though. Xavier Kamba put together a solid individual effort going down the right sideline before crossing the ball just in front. It eluded a few Clarkson defenders and one Plattsburgh player before settling on the foot of Mason Brown, who tapped it in at 19:41 to make the score 1-0.

Clarkson had an overwhelming 12-0 advantage in shots in the second half, but it took some time before one of those chances was able to connect. The Knights were able to knot the game up at 1-1 with a little under 15 minutes left in the contest. Declan Sengbusch began the play by going wide to James Simmons on the right side, and the freshman lofted a ball into the box where it found the head of a Clarkson player, with the attempt going well wide. Bodie Smith, however, was able to gain possession near the end line and sent a cross in front, finding a wide open Brody Frankowski, and the junior was able to chip the ball up and in at 75:06.

With less than 90 seconds remaining in the contest, Clarkson found a way to score the game-winner. Junior Paul Rolland stole the ball in the midfield just shy of the center line and worked his way up field, carrying the ball deep into Plattsburgh defensive territory. He was surrounded by a pair of defenders and was taken off the ball, but it stood still and went uncleared. Bodie Smith almost used Rolland as a screen, and went to his left, finding just enough open space to hit a hard grounder with his left foot and sneaking it inside the far post at 88:45.

Clarkson finished with a 15-4 edge in shots, but the shots on goal margin was limited to 5-2, while Plattsburgh had a 6-2 advantage in corners. Ian Burgos made one save for the Knights and Matthew D'Ippolito had three stops for Plattsburgh.
