Knights Drop Pair in Slugfest at Skidmore

Saratoga Springs, NY – The offenses plugged along for both sides in Saturday's doubleheader, but the Clarkson University Softball team could not keep up with the slugging of Skidmore College, as the Golden Knights fell 9-8 and 12-7 in a Liberty League doubleheader.

The Knights saw their season mark fall to 6-25 overall and 1-11 in the Liberty League, while the Thoroughbreds moved to 19-15 and 6-6. Clarkson is scheduled for a pair of games on Monday afternoon against SUNY Potsdam at Scott Field.

A single by Sophia Finch to drive in Sam Waters in the bottom of the first got Skidmore on the board to start, but the two teams both were rolling on offense by the third. Clarkson scored twice in the top half of that innings, as Ryleigh Fontana came home on a fielder's choice and Emily Martin scored on a sac fly by Lexi Rydelek, giving the Knights a brief 2-1 lead. Skidmore responded with two in the bottom half of the fourth, as a bunt single from Nate' Burley scored one and Cortney Somsky grounded out to drive in another.

The two teams each posted big numbers in the fifth, as Clarkson scored four times in the top half of the frame and the Thoroughbreds then tied the game with three in the bottom of the inning. Rydelek doubled in Ry Garcia for Clarkson's first run of the fifth, Isabel Haspil then plated Kaelyn Buehler for the second, and Maddie Throumoulos launched her second home run of the week to make it 6-3. Skidmore then picked up two on a double by Finch and one more on a double from Rachel Monser.

Clarkson appeared to have put up enough runs in the seventh to win the game thanks to a two-run shot by Isabel Haspil, but Lulu Mickle countered with a two-run homer of her own to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning. Natalie Mayne followed with a single, then moved up to second on a sac bunt and to third on a fly out. She scampered home with the winning run on a wild pitch to end the contest.

Ry Garcia, Naomi King, Maddie Throumoulos, and Ryleigh Fontana each delivered two hits in the first game of the doubleheader.

The offense did not take much of a break in game two as each team scored three times in the first inning. Kelsea Flanagan singled in one run and Lexi Rydelek was able to score on an error for an early 2-0 lead for Clarkson, and then Fontana singled up the middle to make it 3-0. Skidmore immediately got three back with a Sophia Finch blast to center, making it 3-3.

In the second, Natalie Mayne singled in a run to put Skidmore up 4-3, and then Flanagan drove in another run in the top of the third to tie the game 4-4. The Thoroughbreds pushed four across in the fourth and fifth innings as their offense hardly slowed. Lulu Mickle drove in a run with a bunt single and Finch did the rest with her second three-run homer of the game, putting the tally at 8-4. The Knights responded with three in the top of the fifth, two coming around on Emily Martin's triple and she later scoring on a throwing error. However, Cortney Somsky homered to right in the bottom of the fifth, and Lulu Mickle hit a three-run shot to center to put the game away.

Kelsea Flanagan drove in a pair and was 3-for-4 in game two, while Ivy Borkoski, Emily Bulone, and Lexi Rydelek each had two hits for the Knights.
