Clarkson Offense Pounds Out 23 Hits in Split at Castleton

Castleton, VT - With 23 hits and 17 runs in two games, the Clarkson University Softball team's offense stayed on its recent roll, but the Golden Knights didn't quite have enough to gain a sweep at Vermont State University Castleton on Thursday afternoon.

The Golden Knights moved to 6-23 on the year while Castleton saw its mark go to 19-8. Clarkson returns to conference play this weekend at Skidmore College.

The Golden Knights scored multiple runs in five of their seven at bats in the opening game, but Clarkson did have to rally from an early deficit. Castleton plated four in the first to take an early lead, one that it would hold until the fourth. The Spartans picked up one on an RBI single from Carolyne Burlone and then pushed three more across on a home run by Anna Winter. Clarkson responded with two in the top of the second thanks to a Ryleigh Fontana home run, but Castleton added a run back to its lead in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Alex Brouillette.

Clarkson kept rolling on offense scoring twice in the third, the first on a double to center by Kelsea Flanagan and then on a single by Ry Garcia, cutting the margin to 5-4. Clarkson took the lead in the fourth, tying the game first on a double down the left field line by Emily Bulone before Lexi Rydelek delivered her fourth home run of the year, this one a three-run shot that made it 8-5. Castleton scored one in the fifth, but Rydelek homered again in the sixth inning, a two-run shot for her fifth bomb of the year, to put the tally at 10-6. The Golden Knights then blew the game open with four more runs in the top of the seventh. Isabel Haspil drove in a run with a ground out, Bulone singled in another, Rydelek forced home another run on an error, and Kelsea Flanagan singled up the middle for the Knights' 14th run of the contest.

Clarkson pounded out 17 hits in the first game, four from Bulone and then getting two each from Ivy Borkoski, Rydelek, Flanagan, Maddie Throumoulos, Fontana, and Emily Martin. Borkoski, Bulone, Rydelek, Fontana, Martin and Kendall Cuyler also scored twice in the game. Bella Hotchkiss picked up the win in relief, allowing two hits and only one earned run over four frames.

In the second game, Castleton picked up the lead early and held on by tacking on runs here and there. In the second, Jordan Hill doubled in a pair and in the fifth, the Spartans picked up three more, two coming around on a Makayla Walsh doubled in two and then scored on a groundout by Masson Billert.

Clarkson was able to get three runs back to tighten the game up in the top of the sixth. Two came around when Kelsea Flanagan reached on an error, and Flanagan scored herself on an Emily Martin single, putting the tally at 5-3. However, the Spartans would get the runs back in the bottom half of the inning when Alex Brouilltte helped her own cause with a three-run homer.

Unlike the first game, only Emily Martin was able to record a multi-hit game, finishing with four hits in the doubleheader. Avery McDonald took the loss as the starting pitcher, throwing the first two innings. Amanda Corrice threw the middle three frames, and Briana Dieckmann tossed the final inning of the contest.
