Knights Score Sixth in Fourth Frame of Game Two to Split with Union

Canton, NY – Crooked numbers in the second and fourth, including a six-run fourth inning, proved to be enough for the Clarkson University Softball team, as the Golden Knights split their Liberty League doubleheader with Union College on Friday afternoon, dropping the first 6-4 and winning game two 9-7.

Clarkson moved to 3-20 on the year and 1-7 in conference games while the Garnet Chargers saw their record go to 11-15 and 2-6. The Knights are scheduled to play Ithaca College on Saturday, either at Scott Field in Potsdam or down the road again at SUNY Canton.

Union scored a pair in the first, one in the second and then another in the third to build an early 4-0 lead against the Golden Knights in the opening game. Sophia Burynski doubled to straight-away center to plate a pair in the first, Sam Rose's sacrifice bunt pushed another run across in the second, and Ellie Wintringer homered to the opposite field in the third. Clarkson narrowed the margin to three in the bottom half of the third on a Ryleigh Fontana single that plated Maddie Throumoulos, but Union responded with two in the top of the fourth thanks to a Carra Cleaves single, making it 6-1.

The Knights had some life in the fourth as the team scored three times. Naomi King doubled to right-center, sending pinch-runner Kaelyn Buehler home all the way from first base for a 6-2 tally. The next batter, Kendall Cuyler, hit a fly ball to center and the ball kept carrying, eventually landing just over the fence for a two-run shot and a 6-4 game.

That was all either team would get in the game, though it did appear Union had an insurance run in the fifth if not for an out called on a runner leaving early on a sac fly. Clarkson challenged in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases with one out, but a line out to the pitcher and a fly out to left ended the threat.

Ryleigh Fontana was the lone Clarkson player with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 from the ninth spot in the lineup. Ellie Wintringer (2-for-3), Elizabeth Werner (2-for-4) and Amy FitzPatrick (2-for-4) each had multiple hits for Union. Cleaves gained the win with five strikeouts and five hits allowed in six frames, and Amelia Brancazio picked up a save for Union. Ry Garcia took the loss, pitching the first 3.1 innings.

Game two started much the same as the first contest, as Union scored four times in the first two innings. Ellie Wintringer homered to score herself as well as Carra Cleaves and Kyla Springer for a 3-0 lead in the first, and a fielder's choice and error allowed another run to score in the second. Clarkson came back with three in the second, the first trotting home following a bases loaded walk by Isabel Haspil. Ivy Borkoski then followed with a single to left to score another run, and Ry Garcia's sharp single to right plated another run.

Union added a run in the third on Maddy Ewald's single and Cleaves doubled in a run in the fourth to make it 6-3, but the Knights got busy with five hits in the bottom half of the fourth to take their first lead of the day. Maddie Throumoulos led off the inning with a double and then moved to third on a single by Haspil, with a walk by Ivy Borkoski loading the bases. Ry Garcia's walk forced in a run to make it 6-4, and then Ryleigh Fontana singled up the middle to score another. Emily Bulone popped up to second, but the play was a difficult one for Wintringer to make as her back was turned to the infield, and it allowed Borkoski to score. Naomi King followed with a single to score another, Lexi Rydelek singled home another, and King scored on a wild pitch for Clarkson's sixth run of the inning.

Clarkson threatened in both the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings, but Union was able to get out of the jams thanks to lineout double plays. In the seventh the Garnet Chargers got back to within two after a leadoff home run by Wintringer, but Union was retired in order after that to end the contest.

Five players recorded multiple hits in game two for the Knights, as Borkoski (2-for-3), Garcia (2-for-3), King (2-for-4), Rydelek (2-for-3), and Throumoulos (2-for-3) each performed well. Sam Rose was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Wintringer plated four runs on her two home runs in the game for Union.

Bella Hotchkiss gained the win in relief, throwing three innings in the middle of the contest, and Amanda Corrice got the final three outs for a save. Amelia Brancazio took the loss after the opening 3.1 innings of work.
