Knights Battle Ithaca to Extras, but Bombers Take Two

Potsdam, NY – Some great defensive players by the visitors prevented the Clarkson University Softball team from claiming a split on Saturday afternoon, as Ithaca College took two from the Golden Knights with scores of 6-0 and 5-1 (nine innings) at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights fell to 3-22 overall and 1-9 in the Liberty League while Ithaca pushed its mark to 18-7 and 9-1. Clarkson is on the road for Monday, taking on Plattsburgh State.

In the first game, Ithaca picked up four runs in the top of the second, though only one of them was earned. Sydney Miranda doubled just past Maddie Throumoulos to plate the first run, but the next three came around after a defensive miscue. One scored on a fielder's choice, another on a single to the pitcher, and one more on a ground out. The Bombers added a run in the fourth thanks to a Kailen Winkelblech single to center to plate Anna Bello and Ithaca scored one more on a solo home run in the seventh from Haley Petrucci.

Clarkson scattered four hits in the first game, but the team had a chance in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of runners on only to have a fly out end the threat. The same occurred in the seventh when a hit by pitch and walk put two runners on with one out, though this time a strikeout and ground out closed the game.

Maddie Schoenenberger was 3-for-5 in the first game for Ithaca, while four more hitters also recorded multi-hit games. Clarkson's Ivy Borkoski was on base twice with a pair of singles in the first contest. Bella Hotchkiss took the loss for Clarkson, allowing four runs on five hits (one earned run), and Amanda Corrice pitched well with two earned runs over five relief innings. Mady Rowell gained the win for Ithaca, striking out five and walking one in six innings of work.

Game two turned into a pitchers' duel as each team registered only seven hits apiece over nine innings. Ithaca scored one in the first when a bases loaded squib pop up in front of the pitcher stayed in fair territory, giving Haley Petrucci an RBI single. Clarkson tied the game in the third despite a double play with one out. Ivy Borkoski reached on an infield single and then moved to second on a bunt single from Ryleigh Fontana. Borkoski was still on second after the double play, allowing Emily Bulone's single to right to score Clarkson's run.

The Knights put together real threats in the final innings. In the sixth, the bases were loaded after two singles and an error. However, a fortunate bounce off a pitch to the back stop cut down the go-ahead run at the plate and a ground out ended that opportunity. In the seventh, Emily Martin resided on third after a wild pitch, and Isabel Haspil ripped a liner to second that was dropped, but Ithaca's Cate Murray recovered to nip Haspil at first to end the inning. The most impressive defensive play came in the eighth, when Anna Bello leaped to snag a line drive off the bat of Kaelyn Buehler, a ball that would certainly have rolled to the wall and would have allowed Kendall Cuyler to score from first.

Ithaca's defensive play kept the Bombers in the game long enough to score four in the top of the ninth inning. A walk and two infield singles loaded the bases with one out and Schoenenberger doubled to left-center to score two. A wild pitch then plated Jessie Lopez, and Schoenenberger scored on a sac fly to make it 5-1.

Emily Bulone finished the game going 3-for-3 with an RBI as the lone Clarkson player with a multi-hit game. Schoenenberger also was the lone multi-hit player for Ithaca, going 3-for-5 with a run and two RBI. Avery McDonald pitched well over 8.1 innings of work, but took the loss for Clarkson, while Kahlen Cornell allowed just one hit in 2.2 innings of relief for the victory.
